2027 Elections: Consensus candidacy gains momentum in Ebonyi APC

By Our Correspondent
Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State have endorsed the adoption of consensus candidacy as the party’s preferred mode of selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The decision followed a series of consultative meetings convened by Governor Francis Nwifuru across the three senatorial districts of the state, aimed at fostering unity and averting internal disputes within the party.
The meetings, held at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki for Ebonyi South, the party secretariat along Water Works Road for Ebonyi North, and Remeritona Hotels for Ebonyi Central, brought together party leaders and stakeholders to deliberate on the selection of candidates for the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, and Senate seats.
Although consensus was reached in most constituencies, a few were stepped down due to the inability of stakeholders to arrive at a common position.
At a follow-up enlarged meeting held on Friday at the Governor’s Office, which had in attendance former governors, former deputy governors, past and serving members of the National Assembly, principal officers of the State House of Assembly, as well as former ministers and ambassadors, the stakeholders unanimously backed the consensus approach.
The leaders commended Governor Nwifuru for his proactive leadership and foresight in preventing potential political crises within the party.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, a former President of the Senate, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, described the outcome of the deliberations as productive, noting that stakeholders were united in their resolve to adopt consensus as the best option for the party.
He said the decision followed an earlier meeting held on April 28, 2026, adding that all outstanding issues had been resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding.
According to him, the stakeholders agreed that no constituency would be subjected to contest, as consensus arrangements had been successfully implemented across board.
He further disclosed that party leaders urged the governor to sustain his current governance approach, which they noted aligns with democratic ideals and promotes inclusiveness.
The adoption of consensus candidacy is widely seen as a strategic move by the Ebonyi APC to strengthen internal cohesion and present a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.
