As the race for the leadership of the tenth National Assembly thickens, a pro APC group under the auspices of “Asiwaju Shettima Presidential Agenda” has endorsed the Senator Elect for Imo West Senatorial District, Sen Osita Izunaso for the position of the President of the Senate.
The group made the endorsement at a Press Conference held in Abuja on Monday as it noted that as a sociopolitical association in Nigeria and a category-A support group of the ruling All Progressives Congress, it was incumbent upon them to reemphasize to the leadership of the APC and the Senators elect that National cohesion is of great urgence to the party.
While addressing journalists, the group’s Director General, Mr Igho Osiebe who read on behalf of the coalition declared that “the leadership of APC should as a matter of necessity zone the Senate Presidency of the 10th Senate to the South East Geopolitical zone as this will not only be a pursuit of the fairness doctrine of the party but of greater article of and culture of Federal character in the constitution.
The Director General added that the choice of Senator Osita Izunaso will further guarantee the hold of power by the party in Imo State ahead of the coming Imo State gubernatorial election adding that considering the clout of Sen. Izunaso in the Nigerian political sphere, he is the most qualified for the exalted position of the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Furthermore, the group added that the Senator having been known as a man in the political block with enormous and wide experience across the two major(Executive and Legislative) arms of government, his experience over the years has imbued him greatly to navigate through the leadership of the National Assembly in order to compliment the implementations of the RENEWED HOPE policy document of the President elect.
Earlier during their introduction, the group called on Senator Osita Izunaso to take their assurances that they will work round the clock to ensure a proper promotion of his candidature for the position of Senate President in the next assembly.
The ranking Senator Elect was first elected into the Senate in 2007 and after taking his seat in the Senate, he was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Gas as well member of the Senate committees on Rules & Business, Local and Foreign Debts, Housing, Gas, Foreign Affairs and Sports.
It can be recalled that a mid-term evaluation of Senators in May 2009, ThisDay noted that he had sponsored bills for the Conveyance of Persons in Articulated Vehicles Bill, Treatment and Care of Victims of Conflict, National Agency for the Promotion and Preservation of Local Languages in Nigeria and Amendment of the Oil Pipelines Act Amendment.
