The Kogi West Youth Leaders Forum has taken note of the recent comments credited to Senator Sunday Karimi during his interaction with stakeholders in Isanlu, where he attempted to explain his political concerns while making allegations against Hon. Leke Abejide and other respected stakeholders within Kogi West.
As a responsible body committed to promoting peace, unity, progress, and political stability in Kogi West, we consider it necessary to respond to these comments in the interest of truth, fairness, and democratic responsibility.
We acknowledge the constitutional right of every citizen to express political opinions; however, such opinions must be guided by facts, respect, and a proper understanding of democratic values. Senator Karimi’s attempt to question the democratic relevance and credibility of Hon. Leke Abejide is unfortunate and reflects a misunderstanding of the realities of grassroots politics.
Hon. Leke Abejide is an elected member of the National Assembly, representing Yagba Federal Constituency, having secured the mandate of his constituents through a democratic process. His political journey remains a clear testimony to the strength of grassroots democracy and the confidence reposed in him by the people.
Democracy goes beyond occupying a political office; it is about earning the trust of the people, maintaining a strong connection with the electorate, and consistently demonstrating commitment to their needs and aspirations. True leadership is measured by public acceptance, accountability, accessibility, and positive impact.
Hon. Leke Abejide continued relevance in Kogi West politics is built on his relationship with the people, his accessibility, his engagement with his constituents, and his commitment to issues that directly affect their lives.
A leader who has repeatedly presented himself before the electorate and received their mandate through democratic elections has no reason to defend his credentials against unfounded insinuations.
It is therefore disappointing that Senator Karimi has chosen to attribute his political challenges to the actions of individuals instead of reflecting on the expectations of the people, the responsibilities attached to leadership, and the demands of effective representation.
In a democratic environment, political competition and criticism are normal. However, mature leadership requires humility, accountability, and the ability to accept constructive feedback rather than seeking individuals to blame for political realities.
The Kogi West Youth Leaders Forum wishes to state clearly that Hon. Leke Abejide political strength is not built on propaganda, intimidation, or unnecessary controversies. His relevance comes from genuine grassroots support, consistent engagement, service to his people, and dedication to issues affecting his constituents.
Any attempt to blame him for the political challenges of others is simply a distraction from the real issues before the people of Kogi West. Political relevance is earned through service, commitment, and the confidence of the electorate.
We are equally concerned about attempts to drag traditional institutions into political disagreements. Our traditional rulers remain symbols of unity, peace, and cultural heritage, and their respected positions must be protected from unnecessary political disputes. All political actors should accord our royal fathers the dignity and respect they deserve. The group said it is aware that Hon Leke Abejide has in the past offered to reconcile the Senator with the traditional institution, an attempt that depict love and not hate as the Senator attempted to label it. It is unfortunate that the Senator who is expected to seek reconciliation is making unfounded statements against those who he needs to win election.
The people of Kogi West are politically conscious and cannot be misled by narratives designed to shift responsibility away from leaders. The electorate understands that political acceptance is earned through humility, transparency, accessibility, and genuine commitment to public service.
As the 2027 political season approaches, we urge all stakeholders to focus on issue-based politics, constructive engagement, and developmental ideas rather than personal attacks and accusations. The people deserve leaders who will present their achievements, policies, and visions for a better future.
The Kogi West Youth Leaders Forum therefore calls on Senator Sunday Karimi and all political actors to embrace maturity, accountability, and respect in their engagements.
Hon. Leke Abejide democratic credentials are defined by his election, service, grassroots acceptance, and commitment to the people he represents. Anyone seeking to challenge his relevance must do so through superior ideas, better service, and the confidence of the electorate.
