Rotary Clubs operating in Lokoja metropolis have provided free prostate test and counselling for members of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Kogi State Chapter to mark its annual Rotary Family Health Days.
Just as the Rotary Clubs offered a free medical outreach programme for residents of Angwan Yashi and Adankolo communities in Lokoja local government
The 3-day programme was carried out under the Rotary Action Group for Family Health and AIDS prevention with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in collaboration with Rotary Clubs and Districts.
The State Cordinator, Rotary Family Health Days, Grace Ben Kato explained that a large number of persons benefitted from the 3-day free medical outreach organised by the group in Primary Health Care facilities in Angwan Yashi and Adankolo communities in Lokoja local government
According to her, members of both communities were tested, screened and examined for critical issues like HIV and other diseases.
This is in addition to the free medical services provided which included: Malaria screening and treatment, HIV testing and counselling, Diabetes and glucose level screening, hypertension screening, Vitamin A and B administration, deworming of children and
distribution of sanitary pads for girls and mosquito nets among others.
“The target of the Rotary Family Health Days is to touch no fewer than 150,000 lives worldwide within a 3-day period” she added.
Speaking at the NUJ Secretariat Lokoja, Dr Sam Alhassan, Immediate Past President, Rotary Club of Lokoja, said the initiative is geared towards creating awareness of the symptoms of prostate cancer and the importance of regular screening among men 40 years and above
He lauded the union for collaborating with Rotary Club in its efforts at enhancing the wellbeing of residents of Lokoja metropolis and called for sustained enlightenment campaigns on the part of the media
Speaking shortly after receiving the Rotary club at the NUJ Secretariat, the state Chairman, Comrade Adeiza Momohjimoh, lauded the organization for bringing health care services to the doorsteps of the public
He encouraged members of his union to accord priority to issues relating to their healthy living and Rotary activities while expressing the readiness of the media to promote programmes geared towards enhancing the welfare of the masses.
