The Kogi East Senatorial District is bracing for what insiders call its most consequential election since 1999, as three deep-pocketed gladiators — each with contrasting styles, money, and party structures — begin early maneuvering for the seat currently held by two-term Senator Jibrin Isah Echocho.
With a history of violence, ballot snatching, and what many voters describe as “democracy they did not see,” constituents say 2027 must be different.
The yearning is for a senator with charisma and legislative weight, not another “spectator” in the Red Chamber.
For now, three names dominate: Chief Dr. Joseph Ameh Erico of the APC, Hussain Kashim Idris ‘HK’ of the PDP, and QS Aminu Abubakar Suleiman of the ADC. All three bring war chests, grassroots touch, and baggage.
Chief Dr. Joseph Ameh Erico: The Security Mogul With State Backing.
Born in 1966 in Etutekpe-Opko, Olamaboro LGA, Dr. Erico is Managing Director of Real Strikers Security Services Ltd — a Lagos-based firm with branches nationwide employing “thousands of dedicated staff”. An alumnus of Université d’Abomey-Calavi with M.Sc. in Business Administration from Pilgrims University, USA, and an honorary Doctor of Science, he was named “Outstanding Nigerian Performing Security CEO” in 2012.
Qualities and Track Record: Erico leans heavily on his Igala heritage and philanthropy. He distributes cows to Muslim communities ahead of Sallah and frames his ambition around “integrity-driven representation” focused on education, agriculture, security, and youth/women empowerment.
Political Pulse: He “seems to be enjoying the support of the State,” with talk that an “instruction from the powers that be” may secure him the APC ticket. But the path is disputed: the Kogi East APC Zonal Chairman recently disowned reports of his endorsement, calling them “false, baseless and unfounded”.
A viral photo of him kneeling before the Accountant General, Dr. Habibat Oyiza Tijani Onumoko, stirred debate he defended as respect for “constituted traditional authority”.
Hussain Kashim Idris ‘HK’: The Philanthropist Rewriting PDP’s Script.
CEO of Crush Café, Abuja, and founder of the Idris HK Foundation, HK is called a “noiseless revolution” whose “influence creeps into the grassroots like rainfall through thirsty soil”.
Qualities and Track Record: His foundation has delivered boreholes, transformers, solar installations at hospitals, and erosion-control projects across Dekina, Idah, and Igalamela/Odolu LGAs.
He paid school fees for 315 pupils in Ofoji Community Secondary School, extended electricity to Ate Uge, and provided free fuel for commercial motorcyclists.
“Any wealth that cannot inspire me to empower our people should not come my way,” he told supporters in Egume.
Political Pulse: A former APC gubernatorial aspirant in 2015, HK resigned from the party in February 2026, rejecting an offer to stay as “a controlled asset without the Senate ticket”. He’s now intensifying PDP consultations ahead of a formal declaration.
Controversy trails him: Ajaka Ward 1 APC executives say he was “never a registered member” and threatened legal action. Many also warn against him running Idah Federal Constituency, but he “seems to have a different idea” and majority support.
QS Aminu Abubakar Suleiman: The Technocrat-Bridge Builder on ADC’s Rising Tide.
Born May 4, 1974 in Idah, QS Suleiman is a chartered Quantity Surveyor with 23+ years in the built environment. He holds M.Sc. in Project Management from Sheffield Hallam University UK, a PG Certificate in Public Procurement Law from University of Nottingham, and a Diploma in Organizational Leadership from Oxford’s Said Business School.
He is CEO of CDP Partnership Limited and chairman of Kaduna Electricity.
Qualities & Track Record: Described as the “most solidified symbol of unity” for Kogi East, his style is “anchored on reconciliation, inclusion, and consensus-building”. There is a consensus that he is most likely winner in the general election.
A pan-Kogi group in 2023 called him “most qualified” for Senate, citing “flexibility, dynamism and resilience”, Suleiman remains for now the toast of Kogi East Constituents.
He ran for governor under PDP but withdrew minutes before the primary; his 2023 Senate bid ended in disqualification over voter registration issues.
Political Pulse: Now on the ADC platform, stakeholders call him the “Redemption Mandate”. He told party leaders: “We are not just seeking an office; we are seeking a transformation from Idah to Ankpa and from Dekina to Bassa”.
With ADC now “considered the Party of the Eastern Senatorial District,” Suleiman benefits from shifting “Party supremacy” as many APC leaders defect.
What’s At Stake.
For decades, Kogi East constituents say they’ve produced “least qualified” Senator’s who end as spectators. This time, all three frontrunners have money, structure, and strategy. APC controls the state, ADC is surging locally, and PDP has HK’s grassroots machine.
“What is more important,” said an elder in Anyigba, “is the people are looking forward to a contest that will shape or mar the yearning and aspirations of the people, in desiring the much talked about democratic dividends.”
If the votes count, Kogi East may finally get a voice, not just a seat.
