…. Women in Nigeria, in Heaven Angry with National Assembly Members
Women Kogi State say they are using this year’s International Women’s Day Celebration to protest against the rejection of the Gender bills by the National Assembly.
Addressing a press conference in Lokoja as part of activities for the 2022 IWD, the President of NCWS, Kogi State Chapter, Mrs. Petra Bala Gbogbo, said rather than the usual funfair and celebration, women in the State are in a sober mood and protesting the action of the National Assembly Members over denial to pass the Gender Bills.
The President lamented that women are not enjoying the 35% women affirmative action in appointment and party position, leadership and in administration, expressed worries about gender discrimination and stereotype.
Mrs. Gbogbo equally lamented that the bill thrown out by the National Assembly would have allowed for diaspora voting for women, frowned at barriers and discrimination against women in this age, described the men as committing offenses again women and God.
Mrs. Gbogbo described the theme for the 2022 IWD; breaking barriers, biases and shattering the ceiling as very apt, lamented the many religious and cultural barriers and biases against women.
The NCWS President lamented that in time past women held political and leadership positions, said modern day gender discrimination and stereotypes in reserving appointment for men against women is becoming a source of worries for women.
The President further expressed worries men in Nigeria are even castigating women for asking for for their rights, said the time to correct the marginalization and discrimination against women is now
She called for the reservation of seats for women in political positions, expressed worries that as the largest voting population, women deserve more than they get and ought not be denied against after voting in the men.
She called for the use of the Kogi template that reserves seats for women in elective and appointive position, wants that templates applied in the country, commended Gov. Bello for being gender sensitive and for given opportunities to women at the State and Local Government Areas.
While pointing out that women are now more united in the struggle for women’s rights, said they are now more united and stronger to vote for themselves in the coming election.
Similarly, Mrs. Rosemary Omowunmi Alabi, Secretary 2 of NCWS, said women are now demanding 50% appointment and elective position, said enough of the discrimination and segregation.
While adding her voice, Pastor Mrs Rosemary Omowunmi Alabi, Research Coordinator NCWS, said an injury to one is an injury to all, expressed dismay with the National Assembly Members for rejecting the gender bill.
She opined that women in Nigeria are not only angry with the lawmakers, disclosed that woman in heaven are also angry with the lawmakers, demand an increase of the affirmative action to 50%.
Lastly, Chief Ebunlola Joel, 1st Vice Chairperson of NCWS, wondered why men born of women will deny women their rights, particularly that women constitutes highest voting population that elected them, lamented that women are only made important during election….. Continue reading
