Kogi State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ joins millions of women the world over in celebrating this year’s International Women’s Day, marked annually on March 8 to recognize the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women in society.
The theme for this year’s celebration, ”Gender Equality Today For a Sustainable Tomorrow” is apt as it spotlights the need for people to individually and collectively work against biases done deliberately or unconsciously that fuel gender inequality.
We commend the resilience of the Nigerian women for standing tall even in the face of daunting challenges facing the nation, but have continued to make meaningful contributions in all spheres of endeavours towards the development of society.
We wish to express our disappointment and dissatisfaction against the discrimination of women by the rejection of the Gender Equality Bills by the 9th National Assembly in the just concluded amendments to the 1999 Constitution and strongly prevail on the National Assembly to reconsider the representation and immediate passage of the Bills, to enable women have more voice and be equal players in the developmental strides of our nation, and the world.
We call on women never to give up towards achieving their dreams and aspirations as effective, powerful and change makers but remain resolute in ensuring that all forms of gender gaps are bridged, while keeping in mind that women have the numerical strength to effect positive and needed change in society.
As we approach the electioneering year, we encourage more women to continue to get involved in politics and be counted, in order to change the narrative for a better future.
Without gender equality today, a sustainable and an equal future remains beyond our reach. The time for action is now.
