Ganaja’s Political Weathervane: How Alhaji Haruna Ganaja Holds the Key to Kogi Central in 2027.

In Ajaokuta Local Government Area, saying “Ganaja” and “politics” in the same sentence usually means talking about one man: Alhaji Haruna Mohammed Ganaja, former Special Adviser on Community Integration and Harmonization to Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo.
His name carries the kind of recognition that rolls off the tongue as easily as Indomie and MTN. For decades, Ganaja Community has been his base, and from there he has built a political machine that swings votes, breaks alliances, and sets the tone for contests across Kogi Central.
Ganaja’s reputation was forged in the Peoples Democratic Party, where he operated as a generalissimo. He pulled strings, mobilized structures, and commanded loyalty that made him an idol for a generation of party faithful.
When he crossed to the All Progressives Congress, it was billed as the biggest catch in recent Kogi politics. Former Governor Yahaya Bello, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, and the member representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency all celebrated the defection as a game-changer that would rewrite the electoral map.
The first test came with the 2023 governorship election. The outcome was mixed. While APC secured the state, Ganaja’s home turf showed resistance. Many of his longtime supporters felt betrayed by the switch and accused him of dining with what they called “the oppressor.” Ganaja became a theater of tension, and APC struggled to recover lost ground.
The Senat of and House of Representatives elections told the same story. In the closely watched contest between Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Engr. Ohere, it was Ganaja Community votes that gave PDP the margin of victory. For an area that had historically rejected the ruling party over perceived abandonment, the result was a statement.
That statement is now being tested by a different reality. Much of the opposition in Ganaja has since joined APC, and the infrastructure deficit that fueled resentment is beginning to shift. A new market is under construction, the long-abandoned Wada road is being opened up, and a public junior and senior secondary school is taking shape. A primary health care center is also underway. Appointments and empowerment programs are reaching sons and daughters of Ganaja, and for the first time since Ajaokuta LGA was created, the area is positioned to produce the next council chairman.
State officials have deepened the inroad. Accountant General Hajia Habitat, Auditor General Yakubu Okala, and Deputy Speaker Hon. Comfort Egwaba have all made visible interventions in the community. Governor Ododo has visited Ganaja twice in four months, holding meetings with residents alongside Hon. Sanni Egidi, the member representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency, to reassure them of continued support.
The ethnic arithmetic is also shifting. The Igala bloc in Ganaja, once a dominant force in opposition politics, has lost much of its steam. With Hon. Lawal’s defection to PDP, his connection to the Igala race, the opposition retains a foothold in the House of Representatives race, but lacks a comparable stake in grassroots contests. That makes the 2027 Senatorial battle between former Governor Yahaya Bello and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan the real test of Hon. Haruna Ganaja’s influence.
It is here that Haruna Ganaja’s role becomes decisive. Analysts say the contest will be a Herculean task for both sides until the last vote is counted, and Ganaja Community will be the hot seat. His ability to consolidate the gains of APC’s recent infrastructure push, hold his base, and neutralize residual resistance will likely determine who carries Kogi Central.
For a man whose political weight once made PDP untouchable in the area, and whose defection gave APC its strongest foothold, the stakes are personal as much as they are partisan. If Ganaja delivers for APC, it validates the narrative that the party has finally broken PDP’s hold on the community. If it slips, it revives the old perception of abandonment and hands the opposition a lifeline.
In Kogi Central politics, few places command attention like Ganaja. And in Ganaja, few names carry weight like Haruna Ganaja. As 2027 approaches, all eyes are on whether the man who has been both kingmaker and king breaker will tilt the scale once again.
