By joshua Democracy Day: Asiru Idris Calls for Unity, Responsible Citizenship and Renewed Hope in Nigeria
The Kogi State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, **Mukadam Asiwaju Asiru Idris, FCA**, has called on Nigerians to use the occasion of this year’s Democracy Day to reaffirm their commitment to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and the collective pursuit of a stronger and more prosperous nation.
In a Democracy Day message commemorating June 12, Asiru Idris described democracy as the bedrock of good governance, inclusive development, and citizen participation, noting that the nation’s democratic journey remains a testament to the resilience, courage, and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
“Democracy Day offers us an opportunity not only to celebrate our democratic gains but also to reflect on the sacrifices of the patriots and heroes who fought tirelessly to secure the freedoms and rights we enjoy today. It is a reminder that the future of our nation rests on our shared commitment to justice, accountability, and national progress,” he stated.
The Finance Commissioner acknowledged the economic and social challenges facing the country but emphasized that such difficulties should inspire greater unity and collective action rather than division and despair.
“Nigeria’s greatest strength lies in its diversity. Our different ethnic backgrounds, cultures, faiths, and languages represent a rich national heritage that should unite rather than divide us. At this critical period in our history, we must reject all forms of intolerance, discord, and sectional interests, and embrace the ideals of mutual respect, understanding, and national cohesion,” he said.
Asiru Idris particularly urged Nigerian youths to remain optimistic and actively contribute to nation-building through innovation, hard work, and responsible citizenship, stressing that they remain the country’s most valuable asset and the drivers of future development.
He also called on leaders at all levels to continue demonstrating integrity, selflessness, and dedication to public service, while encouraging citizens to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and advancing sustainable development.
“As we mark this important national milestone, let us renew our faith in Nigeria and work together to build a nation where every citizen can thrive regardless of background, belief, or status. Democracy flourishes when we place the national interest above personal, political, and sectional considerations,” he added.
The Commissioner further prayed for peace, stability, economic prosperity, and divine guidance for Nigeria and its leaders, expressing confidence that the nation would continue to overcome its challenges and achieve greater heights.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, honours the enduring struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria and commemorates the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as a defining moment in the country’s democratic evolution.
