Attacks On Students: Kogi Govt Vows To Bring Perpetrators To Justice, Assures Safety

The Kogi State Government has vowed to apprehend the perpetrators of robbery attacks on Students dormitories in Felele Lokoja.
Recalled that students of Federal University Lokoja (FUL) and Kogi State Polytechnic were attacked and robbed of their belongings at their dormitories in Bassa village and Motel 5 in Felele, Lokoja on Saturday.
Many students were reportedly injured during the attacks.
While addressing the students during the on-the-spot assessment to the area on Wednesday, the Kogi Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones (FCIB), sympathised with them and promised to ensure their safety.
He expressed sadness over the ugly incident but appreciated God that no life was lost to the robbery attacks
“We are here for on the spot assessment on the robbery attacks on your dormitories, we are greatly disturbed and worried that such a thing could happen in our state especially in the capital.
“Kogi is a State that prides itself as having one of the best security architectures not just in northern Nigeria but in the entire country as a whole.
“We are really dismayed that this has happened, and it is very unfortunate.
“But let me assure you that the Government of His Excellency, Gov. Ahmed Ododo is fully committed to continue on the trajectory of safety of life and property that he inherited from his predecessor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello,” he said.
The commissioner assured the students and the people of the communities of government’s commitment not to have a repeat of such ugly incident in the area and the state at large.
“It is our prayers that those people who were injured will get healed quickly.
“But let me assure you that the perpetrators of such heinous act would be brought to book in no distant time.
“This is not a political statement, it is a statement of reality and that is exactly what will happen.
“Please, do not allow the incident to affect your psyche or dampen your moral; be assured that government is fully aware of the situation and we are in control.
“We will do everything possible to make sure you are safe and secured in your hostels and dormitories.
“That ugly incident is the last you will see while you are here by God’s grace, the commissioner said.
Also speaking, Comrade Abdullahi Adamu, the Transition Committee Chairman of Lokoja Local Government Area, assured the students of their security.
He, however implored the students and the residents of the areas to obey the ongoing restriction of movement from 10pm to 5am.
Abdullahi stressed that the movement restrictions was to enhance the ongoing security patrols throughout the affected communities.
According to him, the measures are temporary and are implemented with the primary goal of ensuring the safety and security of all residents.
He stressed the need for residents to adhere to the restriction order and in providing any necessary assistance to law enforcement agencies.
One of the attacked students, who spoke on behalf of others, Okehi Alimahu, appreciated the commissioner and his team for the visit.
“We really appreciate the commissioner and his team for the visit because we never expected that government officials will visit us.
“The visit has given us a little confidence that such a thing will not happen again.
“We are appealing to the state government to fulfill its promises in ensuring our safety,” he said.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Youths and Students’ Matters, Oladele John-Nihi and other government officials accompanied the commissioner.
