UBTH Gets National Universities Commission (NUC) Approval To Run Bachelor Of Nursing Science (BNSc) Programme

 

….Inaugurates Governing Council of College of Nursing Sciences

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has successfully inaugurated the Governing Council of its College of Nursing Sciences following the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) official approval for the institution to run the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) programme in affiliation with the University of Benin (UNIBEN) starting from the 2026/2027 Academic Session

The inauguration took place on Monday, 24th August 2026, at the Hospital’s Board Room, in line with the decision of the Hospital Management Committee to constitute a Governing Council for the College.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, emphasized the importance of the Governing Council in providing strategic direction, effective oversight and quality assurance for the College, while ensuring that its academic and professional standards remain consistent with national and global best practices.

In her acceptance remarks, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Mrs. Abieyuwa Eweka, expressed appreciation to the Management of the Hospital for the confidence reposed in the Council. She assured that the Council would work collaboratively with Management, the University of Benin, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders to provide purposeful leadership, uphold academic and professional standards, and position the College of Nursing Sciences as a centre of excellence in nursing education.

She noted that the recent approval of the BNSc programme presented a significant opportunity to produce highly competent, ethical and compassionate nursing professionals and pledged the Council’s commitment to integrity, accountability and the continued growth and development of the College.

The College of Nursing Sciences, UBTH, was recently granted approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) to run the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) programme in affiliation with the University of Benin (UNIBEN) with effect from the 2026/2027 Academic Session. The admission process for the programme is currently ongoing, providing prospective students with an opportunity to pursue university-level professional nursing education within the UBTH academic and clinical environment

The Council is chaired by the Provost of the College, Mrs. Abieyuwa Eweka. Members of the Council include the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. Emmanuel Osaigbovo; Director of Nursing Services, Edo State Ministry of Health, Mr. Aliu Nurudeen Obogai; representative of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Peter Omionawele; representative of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria; Dean, Faculty of Nursing, University of Benin, Prof. Fidelis Okafor; and Head, Training Division, Ms. R. M. Eghobamien while the Registrar of the College, Mrs. Esther N. Mordi, serves as Secretary.

Present at the inauguration were members of the Hospital’s core management team, including the Director of Administration, Jim Uwadiae, Esq.; Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Clinicals), Dr. Philip Osho; Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Training and Monitoring), Dr. Anthony Atimati; and Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Research and Ethics), Prof. Adebola Ehizele. Others were the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Grace Arheghan; Coordinator, Dental Services, Prof. Nneka Chukwuma-Oghomi; and Head, Human Resources Department, Mrs. J. J. Oyakhilome.

The inauguration further underscores the Hospital Management’s commitment to advancing capacity building and developing a new generation of competent, compassionate and professionally grounded nurses who will contribute meaningfully to healthcare delivery in Nigeria and beyond.
