The Nigerian Post Newspaper Calls For Nomination For Suitably Qualified Individuals, Organizations For 2025 Margret Ekpo Memorial Award.

The Nigerian Post Newspaper in conjunction with the Margaret Ekpo Biographical Centre, Calabar, is calling for nomination for suitably qualified individuals and organizations for this year’s The Nigerian Post/Margaret Ekpo Memorial Lecture and Award.

In a statement issued to Newsmen in Lokoja by the Publisher and Editor in Chief, Abu Michael, said the nomination is for persons and organizations that have contributed handsomely to the upliftment of women, Children and the vulnerable in the society.

The upliftment the statement said could be through advocacy , fighting for rights of women and children, payment of school fees, granting of scholarships, building of health and educational institutions and support to other forms of support to the vulnerable groups in the society that have helped brought succour to the less privileged.

According to the statement, the nomination and profile should reach the Editor in Chief, The Nigerian Post Newspaper, No. 7 Lord Lugard road, Lokoja.

The Annual Margaret Ekpo Memorial Lecture organized by the Nigerian Post Newspaper will hold on the 27th May, 2025.

Margaret Ekpo (1914-2006)

Margaret Ekpo was a pioneering Nigerian women’s rights activist and politician. She played a significant role in Nigeria’s fight for independence and the advancement of women’s rights.

Throughout the 1940s and 50s, Chief Ekpo fought against colonialism and gender inequality. She founded the Market Women Association in the city of Aba to unionize market women. The Association promoted women’s solidarity to fight for economic and political rights.

Later, Chief Ekpo established the Aba Township Women’s Association. By 1955, women in Aba outnumbered male voters in a citywide election. Chief Ekpo won a seat in the Eastern Regional House of Assembly of the Nigerian Parliament in 1961. As a legislator, she worked on issues related to women’s economic and political rights.
