The Demise of Major General Olubunmi Irefin, A colossal Loss to Nigerian Army and Kogi State – Speaker Kolawole

Friday 11th December, 2020

Press Release

Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Prince Matthew Kolawole has described the sudden and shocking demise of a fine unassuming highly intellectual and gallant officer of the Nigerian Army, Major General Olubunmi Irefin, GOC 6 Division whose death occurred yesterday from Covid-19 complications.

The Speaker is still in a state of confusion since the devastating news filtered to town as he could not gather enough strength to shoulder the grief of the death of a complete gentleman whose office and authority he possessed did not deter him from his people even as an Army General.

He said it is disheartening to hear of someone who was home barely two weeks ago with dignitaries from all walks of life to celebrate the life and time of his beloved mother is no more.

Oh death where is your sting, to have taken away a great man, an outstanding philanthropist who gave to fault, a rare community leader and a detribalised Nigerian who have served the country in different capacity within and outside the Nigerian Army.  Major General Olubunmi Irefin, you have truly completed your assignment here on earth.

The Speaker said Nigerian Army has lost one of its finest and gallant officers, Kogi State indeed has lost a great son who have made us proud at every assignment given to him, no wonder Aiyetoro – Gbedde on the 28th November, 2020 where he bid farewell to his beloved mother not knowing he will only live barely two weeks later was clearly a testimony of strong characters to have gathered such personalities that attended the mother’s funeral.

He said he is consoled with the words of God which say in everything we should thank God and also there is time to be born and a time to die, it is therefore on this words, Rt. Hon. Prince Matthew Kolawole on behalf of his family, the good people of Kabba/Bunu State Constituency, entire members of 7th Assembly, management and staff of the Kogi State House of Assembly, wish to commiserate with his wife, children, the entire Irefin family, Aiyetoro – Gbedde Community, Okun nation, the people and Government of Kogi State and the Nigerian Army Council over the sudden and devastating death of our brother, uncle, husband, father and boss, Major General Olubunmi Irefin, praying that will grant us the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable lost.

Adieu, may his soul rest in perfect peace

Signed:
Femi Olugbemi,
Chief Press Secretary to the Honourable Speaker,
Kogi State House of Assembly
