Media owners and journalists have been asked to uphold and abide by the ethics of the Journalism profession.
This was the summation of charge made by Alhaji Shuaibu Usman Liman, NUJ National Secretary at a one day training workshop on conflict sensitive reporting under the Get involved, Dialogue and Improve Project.

The GDRIP Project was organized by Stallion Times to encourage Journalists to provide accurate and balanced reportage, remind Journalists of their constitutional roles to hold government accountable and to provide an opportunity for engagement on ethical issues in Journalism on Conflict sensitive reporting.

The NUJ National Secretary who was a resource person at the one day training cautioned Journalists to be mindful of timeliness or the breaking the news syndrome as the barrier for unbalanced report.
Rather, the Resource person urged journalists to always ensure that they uphold truth, justice, objectivity and accuracy in their reportage.
Alhaji Liman identified lack of conducive environment, poverty, lack of adequate training,
Anti media laws,
Insufficient insurance cover, impunity of crimes against journalists and poor working conditions for the media practitioners as factors militating against professionalism.
Alhaji Liman urged Journalists to be guided by adequate preparation,
understand the terrain they operate, pointing out that the Journalism profession remains the conscience of the society.
Still speaking on fake news and ethical Journalism, urged journalists to be sure of their reportage so as not to be tempted into propagating fake news.
While urging that Journalists must carry out adequate checks before stories are written and transmitted for public consumption.
He concluded by urging Journalists to hold leaders accountable to the people by the media, said it should be done in a manner devoid of sentiments and bias as the only way to sustain the nation’s democracy, pointing out that distracting leaders from acts of governance through such frivolities of fake news and misinformation.
Highlights of the training was discussion by panels made up of Journalists, with a communique issued at the end of the training.
