Proposed Electoral Amendment Bill: Hon. Shaba Ibrahim endorses electronic voting

Lokoja/Kogi Reps Member, Hon. Shaba Ibrahim, MHR; has expressed his views on the ongoing speculation that the National Assembly pass an Electoral amendment bill that disallows electronic voting and electronic form of transmitting results.

Appearing on Thursday on Kaakaki on AIT, he threw his weight behind electronic form of voting.

He said; “To the best of my knowledge, there is no final draft yet, but in the last few days there has been speculation in the media, social media inclusive about some purported insertions. Some have claimed to have even sighted some sections of the proposed amendment bill where issues of electronic transmission of results from the polls have been excluded or outlawed, if you like.

“Worrisome as that would appear, the good thing is that the reaction from the house has been encouraging. The speaker was quoted to have said all that still remain in the realm of speculation…and I think I am well impressed with that. (This is) because a lot of Nigerians are actually looking forward to having all these amendments, so that we can have a transparent and credible electoral process.”

He said the world has since moved away from manual voting to electronic voting and Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind on that.

“Personally for me, it is unacceptable to me that we have an election that is short of those views as expressed by majority of Nigerians particularly at that public hearing,” he further added.
