Residents of Bayelsa community in Abuja have raised the alarm over the allegation that the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has concluded plans to render about 300 Bayelsa State indigenes living in Old Chelsea Hotel, homeless.
The community stormed the liaison office in Abuja to present their position
The hotel, which is one of the properties belonging to a former Governor of Bayelsa State, late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, that was seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was handed over to the state government and has been a home to about 300 Bayelsans in the Federal Capital Territory. (FCT).
It was gathered that the residents, most of whom are unemployed graduates looking for job, low income civil servants, petty business men and women struggling to sustain themselves while waiting to be gainfully employed, youth corps members of the Bayelsa origin serving in FCT amongst others are now stranded by the development.
According to one of the residents of the community who pleaded anonymity, some representatives of the government allegedly traded off the property to investors. The occupants, who condemned the action said the government decision did not consider their plights and the economic conditions of the masses, adding that ejecting them will cause untold hardship.
They also said that they are already traumatized by the decision of the government, adding that it would render them homeless and make them vulnerable at a time when the insecurity in the FCT was critical.
They also accused the state Government of having the penchant to sell state-owned properties acquired by successive governments just as the Bayelsa State Liaison Office, along the Shehu Shagari way, Central Business District, popularly known as Izon Wari has been sold out.
The occupants called on the government to consider their plight and help them. They pleaded that they are helpless and therefore want leaders in the state as well as well-meaning leaders of conscience of the region to intervene and make the government rescind its decision.
