One Man, With Many Hearts of Gold: How Engr. Bashiru Abubakar Gegu Is Touching Lives Across Kogi

One Man, With Many Hearts of Gold: How Engr. Bashiru Abubakar Gegu Is Touching Lives Across Kogi

By Abu Micheal

In Kogi State politics, empathy is rare. That is why Engr. Bashiru Abubakar Gegu, Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, stands out. Across divides, he is described as “one man with many hearts of gold, touching lives in positive ways.” Cross his path, and you leave with a lasting legacy.

Born from a humble beginning, Gegu is moved by people and community challenges. His rule is simple: “Engr. Gegu will not sleep with his eyes closed if his next door neighbor is hungry or needs medical assistance.” That conviction drives action across every sector.

Start with education. He offers scholarships at all levels, from primary to tertiary, lifting school fees off poor families. In healthcare, he visits hospitals unannounced to offset medical bills for strangers. He believes dignity should not die at the hospital gate because of poverty.

In agriculture, he provides farmers with tractors, herbicides, and incentives. He knows Kogi’s food security starts with the man behind the hoe. On power, he has delivered transformers to several communities that lived in darkness for years. He connects homes to light because development cannot happen in the dark.

To the youth, he is a doyen. They call him “The Commander,” “Sarkin Yaki,” and “King of Boys.” At 46, he channels resources into skills, startups, and mentorship. He gives young people a stake, not just a token. His native intelligence and intellectual acumen are described as unprecedented for his age.

Many argue that no individual, living or dead, has made the kind of impact Gegu has made. Described as a “Messiah,” the title comes from results, not ego. He intervenes because the need is urgent, not because cameras are present.

As 2027 approaches, Kogi LGA is considered safe for APC, courtesy of his intervention and grassroots grip. His model is not charity. It is community investment. He sees himself in the student without fees, the farmer without tools, the patient without a bill payer.

In a state of 21 LGAs, Engr. Gegu proves public office can still mean public service. One man with many hearts of gold. For Kogi, he is not just a Commissioner. He is proof that governance with empathy is still possible.

The question for Kogi: When a man gives this much without a ballot on the line, what happens when the people ask him to lead on a bigger stage when the ballot are released? Certainly, he will always have his way.
