Appeal for the Payment of Outstanding 2024, 2025 and 2026 BECE Handling Charges, Mock Examination Handling Charges, and Provision of Overhead Costs to Public Secondary Schools
Your Excellency,
We write on behalf of the National Association of Senior Secondary School Academic Staff Union (NASSU), Kogi State Chapter, to respectfully appeal for your urgent intervention regarding the non-payment of the 2024, 2025 and 2026 BECE Handling Charges, as well as the remittance of Mock Examination handling charges due to schools.
The delay in the payment of these entitlements has placed an enormous financial burden on public secondary schools across the state. Most school administrators have continued to discharge their responsibilities despite the absence of these legitimate funds.
It is important to state that public secondary schools in Kogi State presently receive no overhead allocation from the government. Consequently, many schools rely almost entirely on the ₦4,000 PTA levy paid per student each term to meet essential operational expenses. This amount is grossly inadequate to cater for the day-to-day running of schools, including maintenance, sanitation, security, administrative activities and other pressing needs.
In view of the above, we humbly request Your Excellency to:
1. Approve and release the outstanding 2024, 2025 and 2026 BECE Handling Charges without further delay.
2. Ensure the prompt remittance of Mock Examination handling charges to schools.
3. Introduce a monthly or termly overhead allocation to public secondary schools to support effective administration.
4. Consider an overhead grant of not less than ₦200,000 per school, with adjustments based on each school’s student population and the number of candidates registered for WAEC and other public examinations.
We believe these measures will greatly strengthen school administration, improve the learning environment and enhance the quality of education in Kogi State.
We respectfully urge Your Excellency to give this appeal favourable consideration before the commencement of the next academic session.
