The North Central Zone (Zone C) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has conferred on the Vice-Chancellor of Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU) Anyigba, Professor Marietu Ohunene Tenuche, an award of excellence, as an Icon and Cynosure of Educational Transformation.
Issued at the 1st senate seating of the association on 6th may 2023 at PAAU auditorium, the Coordinator of the Zone, Comrade Anzaku Shedrack Ovye, stated that the award is in recognition of Prof. Tenuche’s giant strides and uncommon contribution towards youths, women, and student empowerment as well as her professional service delivery towards purposeful leadership and educational transformation.
Following the award, the Vice-Chancellor was also decorated as the Mother of the Zone and inducted into the Hall of Fame of NANS Zone C.
Leading the induction ceremony, the immediate past Assistant Secretary General of NANS (National), Comrade Sunday Omede, recounted the achievements of the Vice-Chancellor, emphasizing especially, how her strategic approach to the security of students has created conducive environment for day-time and night-time studies for the students.
Comrade Omede also mentioned the Vice-Chancellor’s constant support for students of PAAU and their union in executing internal programs and attending external functions.
In her acceptance speech, the Vice-Chancellor commended the evolving maturity of student union executives in their pursuit of the welfare of students. Using PAAU as an example, she noted that such maturity has contributed to how swiftly University management responds to matters raised by Student Unions through their duly elected leaders and the University management’s commitment to ensuring the provision of welfare services to students.
Citing the recently conducted PAAU SUG elections as a good model, the VC charged the student leaders to promote free and fair elections at their levels to bring about impactful leadership.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the student leaders to consider the present economic realities of the country in their demands and administrations, tasking them to demonstrate good managerial skills and leadership ethics while aiming at a judicious use of resources, guided by their budgets.
In pursuit of a healthy academic environment, the VC charged the union to do more in educating students in their various institutions on the need to avoid indecent dressing, become self dependent, and maintain high academic records which qualifies them for many available scholarship opportunities, demonstrates the quality of their education, and positions them as priceless citizens.
