The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has initiated a flood sensitization campaign in flood-prone communities across Kogi state to prevent further disasters.
The initiative by N-HYPPADEC is aimed at addressing the challenges faced by 10 flood-prone local government areas out of the 21 in the state.
The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission is presently working in ten local government areas within Kogi State with diverse projects, including the construction of classrooms, provision of regular medical outreach programs, borehole installations, and solar lighting.
The agency is also committed to constructing drainage systems for erosion control, supporting the payment of WAEC and NECO fees, and offering scholarships to indigent children pursuing tertiary education, among other initiatives.
The sensitization campaign by N-HYPPADEC on flood-related issues commenced in Koton-Karfe,
Lokoja, Idah and Ofu, with residents describing the initiative, pledged to adhere to the advice provided, in preparation for any eventualities.
The Sensitization by N-HYPPADEC is anticipation of the predicted floods, with the gradual release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, coupled with heavy rainfall, led the agency to flash floods in some of the vulnerable areas.
Speaking, the Kogi State Coordinator of N-HYPPADEC, Engr Mrs. Joan Ogwuche, said the visit is to put the residents of the Communities on alert, insisting that to be forewarned is to be forearmed.
She assured that N-HYPPADEC will remain a worthy partner in terms of support, but advised the residents to make safety their watchwords.
