N-HYPPADEC ENGAGES KOGI STATE GOVERNMENT ON REVIVAL OF IDAH WATER WORKS
In a renewed effort to improve access to potable water and enhance living conditions in its mandate areas, the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has initiated a high level of startegic engagement with the Kogi State Government for the revival of the long-abandoned Idah Water Works.
This initiative underscores the Commission’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure deficits in hydroelectric power-producing communities, particularly in water supply, sanitation, and public health.
Leading the Commission’s delegation, the Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa (FCNA, FNIIS, FNIM), emphasized that the revival of the Idah Water Works is a priority intervention aimed at addressing the persistent water challenges faced by residents of Idah and surrounding communities. He noted that access to clean and safe water is fundamental to sustainable development and community well-being.
According to him, the engagement with the Kogi State Government is designed to strengthen collaboration, harmonize technical efforts, and ensure efficient utilization of resources in restoring the facility to full operational capacity.
“This intervention is part of our broader mandate to improve the quality of life in member states. Reviving the Idah Water Works will not only provide safe drinking water but also significantly enhance public health, stimulate economic activities, and support overall community development,” he stated.
He further stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration, noting that sustainable outcomes can only be achieved through strong partnerships between federal and state institutions.
The Managing Director was represented by the Director of Finance and Administration, Dr. Gabi Haruna Jimoh, who led the delegation alongside the Director of Operations, Engr. Iliyasu Abdullahi Wara (FNSCE), on a visit to the Kogi State Ministry of Water Resources. Discussions focused on key technical and operational modalities required to restore the Idah Water Works to full functionality.
Providing further insight, Engr. Wara delivered a detailed technical overview of the proposed project, recommending the engagement of competent local contractors to enhance efficiency, ensure timely delivery, and promote community ownership. He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to executing high-quality and sustainable projects across its member states.
The proposed intervention is expected to include a comprehensive assessment of existing infrastructure, rehabilitation of critical components, upgrading of equipment, and the establishment of sustainable management systems to guarantee long-term functionality.
Responding, the Honourable Commissioner for Water Resources, Engr. Yahaya MD. Farouk, described the visit as timely, noting that the Kogi State Government is already exploring strategies to revitalize waterworks across the state. He commended N-HYPPADEC for its proactive approach and assured the delegation of the Ministry’s full cooperation.
However, the Commissioner expressed concern over the persistent vandalism of water infrastructure, which he identified as a major challenge affecting service delivery. He highlighted the pressing water supply issues in Kogi East and emphasized the urgent need for repairs.
To address these concerns, he disclosed that stronger measures would be implemented to safeguard public assets, including formal agreements with community leaders to ensure the protection and sustainability of rehabilitated facilities.
Residents of Idah and adjoining communities have long faced inadequate access to safe water, often relying on unsafe sources. The revival of the Idah Water Works is therefore expected to bring significant relief, improve hygiene standards, and enhance overall quality of life.
N-HYPPADEC reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and excellence in project execution, as it continues to deliver impactful interventions and foster sustainable development in hydroelectric power-producing regions.
