Make social responsibility reportage major priority towards national cohesion – Prof. Sadeeque Abba, DVC University of Abuja.


 

Media Practitioners have been asked to make social responsibility reportage and self censorship a major priority streamlining conflict sensitive reportage towards national cohesion.

Prof. Sadeeque Abba, Deputy Vice Chancellor, University of Abuja gave the charge as a lead speaker at a panel session at a one day Community Initiatives to Promote Peace (CIPP), with the theme: Fostering an enabling environment for peace in Nigeria, organized by Savannah Centre for Diplomacy and Development holding at the Transcorp Hillton Abuja.

 

Speaking on the role of the Media and Policy Makers in streamlining conflict sensitive reportage towards national cohesion, the DVC urged the media and policy makers to incorporate conflict sensitive reportage in the activities as it has to do with values and norms.

The University Don stressed the need for redefining who is a journalists, said it is time the Nigerian Press Council, NUJ, NGE, NPAN, puts its house in order towards achieving professionalism.

While noting that the need to have legislative enactment that would give bite to professionalism to give bite to the Journalism profession the University Don pointed out has become necessary.

He concluded by calling for the need for a robust collaboration between the National Assembly and the Media in streamlining conflict sensitive reportage towards national cohesion.

Ms. Toun Okewale Sonaiya, CEO of WFM 91.7 and Mustapha Isah, President, Head of News (National) silver bird group, advocated for responsive and responsible, with editorials and news responsibility created, said the meeting remains apt in view of the important role the media plays in streamling conflict sensitive reportage towards National cohesion….
