Kogi: Police Corporal Shoots Female Colleague Dead, Kills Self; CP Orders Probe

‎Two police officers have died in a suspected love-related shooting in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, after a male officer allegedly shot his female colleague, said to be his girlfriend, before turning the gun on himself.
‎
The deceased officers were identified as Woman Corporal Grace Abraham and Corporal Amos Yusuf.

The tragedy it was gathered followed a breakdown in their romantic relationship, reportedly over suspicions involving another man.
‎
‎The incident occurred on Friday, October 23, 2026, at ASCO Camp, Ajaokuta, where the two officers were said to be serving.

Sources familiar with the account alleged that the couple had experienced disagreements before senior officers intervened and separated them within the division.
‎
‎According to the account, Yusuf, who was reportedly on night duty, allegedly went to Abraham’s quarters with an AK-47 rifle and shot her before shooting himself. The precise circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the reported relationship dispute, have yet to be officially established.
‎
The Kogi State Police Command, in a statement issued on Sunday by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, confirmed that two serving officers died in the incident. The statement identified the officers as Corporal Amos Yusuf and Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi, “Preliminary findings indicated that Yusuf shot the female officer before shooting himself.”
‎
The Command said the incident was reported at about 11:04 p.m., after which the Divisional Police Officer, Ajaokuta, led a team of personnel to the scene, “Both officers were taken to separate medical facilities, where they were confirmed dead, while their remains were deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.
‎
“An AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered at the scene. The case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for an in-depth investigation.”
‎
‎The police said the circumstances and motive behind the shooting remained under investigation and cautioned against speculation on issues yet to be established. The Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.
‎
The reported circumstances of the tragedy have raised questions about how a relationship dispute could culminate in the deaths of two serving officers. The alleged motive, however, remains unconfirmed by the police as investigations continue.
End.
