2026 Press Week: Kogi Journalists Hold Thanksgiving Service, Cleric Urges Media to Remain Conscience of Society

As part of activities to mark the 2026 Press Week of the Kogi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), media professionals led by the Chairman, Alh. Ademu Seidu on Sunday attended a Thanksgiving Service at the CEFN Zonal Headquarters in Lokoja.

The journalists, cutting across print, broadcast and online platforms, irrespective of religious affiliations, gathered to thank God for His protection in the discharge of their duties and to seek divine guidance for the challenges ahead.

In his message, the Zonal Pastor, Reverend Dr. Philip Alhassan, commended the role of the media in sustaining democracy and called on practitioners to uphold truth, objectivity and professionalism at all times.

Dr. Alhassan described journalists as the last hope of the common man and the conscience of society, noting that in an era of misinformation, fake news and ethnic sentiments, the responsibility of the media to set the agenda for good governance and to give voice to the voiceless has become more critical than ever.
He urged journalists in Kogi State to use the 2026 Press Week as a moment of sober reflection to chart a new direction anchored on ethical journalism, unity among members, and commitment to development journalism that promotes peace and accountability.
“The pen is powerful. The camera does not lie. The microphone amplifies truth. You must sustain the truth no matter whose ox is gored. Democracy cannot thrive without a fearless and truthful press,” the cleric admonished.
The thanksgiving service, which featured prayers for journalists, their families and the peace of Kogi State and Nigeria, ended with special intercession for practitioners.
The congregation expressed joy at seeing the men behind the camera, microphone and pen in their midst, rejoicing with them and offering prayers for protection, wisdom and greater impact in the coming years.
Speaking shortly after the service, the NUJ Chairman, Alh. Ademu Seidu, thanked the CEFN for hosting the journalists and reaffirmed the Council’s resolve to remain professional, united and committed to the service of humanity.
