Kogi State Government has restated her commitment to revamping education sector in the state and ensure quality, accessible and sustainable education for all.
The State’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Wemi Jones, FCIB, gave the assurance at the flag-off of a week-long workshop for the drafting of the documents for the State Education Sector Plan (SESP) and State Education Strategic Operational Plan (SESOP).
It would be recalled that His Excellency, Gov. Yahaya Bello, had earlier directed the state education ministry to develop a new education sector plan as part of holistic measures adopted by the state to address the challenges facing the sector.
The Commissioner noted that the SESP and SESOP documents would guide the state investment in education by an evidence based plan that would esure implementation of strategies that were realistic, effective and yielded the desired changes.
The Commissioner thanked the governor for believing so much in the SESP and SESOP project, saying it will be the pivot of great things that would happen in education sector in Kogi State.
He further commended the governor for being so committed to education development in Kogi, while appealing to the participants to produce the required standard SESP and SESOP documents that would be presentable and acceptable to all.
In his remarks, Dr David Shofoyeke, a UNICEF Consultant, commended the team that had put together the Zero Draft of the documents in 2019, saying they did a great job.
He commended the Commissioner for being a visionary leader and for supporting His Excellency to submit viable ideas document that would bring about the desirable changes in Kogi education sector.
He stressed that the SESP and SESOP documents would help the state a lot especially to accessing so many assistance from development partners which were great resources.
”When you have a good sector plan that is shared with and developed by the people, and not for the people, then the tendency is that you will be able to access assistance from different develop partners”, he said.
The consultant also urged the state to use the sector plan to inform annual budget on education, so that it would not be development partners dependent.
The technical committee were drawn from the state’s MDAs such as STETSCOM, SUBEB, AANFE, Ministries of Justice; Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, the education ministry’s Permanent Secretary & Directors, and representatives from all tertiary institutions in the state.
