Kogi Government Reiterates Commitment Ensuring
every child is shielded from all forms of deprivation – Hon. Halimat Alhassan, SSA on Child Labor and Trafficking
The Kogi State Government says it is committed to ensuring that every child in the State is shielded from all forms of deprivation, as mandated by the law.
Hon. Halimat Alhassan, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Kogi State on Child Labor and Trafficking made the disclosure at a Press Conference pointing out that the present administration mission is clear, “to eradicate child labor and trafficking from our state and, by extension, from our nation”.
She said the welfare and protection of children is not just a priority; said it is a solemn duty that the state government holds in the highest regard.
She explained that the administration of Gov Usman Ahmed Ododo is deeply concerned just as the public, especially the citizens of Kogi State—the pressing issues of child labor and trafficking.
“Let me assure you, any case of abuse or violation of a child’s rights will be addressed with the urgency and seriousness it deserves. Our children deserve nothing less”.
“As we all know, the Nigerian Constitution, particularly Chapter 4 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), enshrines the basic rights to life, education, health, and protection from abuse and exploitation for all Nigerians—children and adults alike”.
“These rights are not mere words; they are the foundation of a just society. The law encompasses 278 sections, addressing critical areas such as healthcare services, the prohibition of child marriage, and the responsibilities of the state government to uphold these rights”.
“This principle applies equally to every Nigerian child. The Child Rights Act of 2003, particularly Part 4, further reinforces these fundamental rights—rights to survival, development, freedom of association, thought, conscience, religion, and many more”.
“It is imperative that these rights are upheld, ensuring that every action concerning a child—whether by an individual, public or private body, institution, or government—places the best interests of the child as the paramount consideration”.
“Sections 33-42 of the Nigerian Constitution explicitly guarantee fundamental rights such as the right to life, dignity, personal liberty, fair hearing, freedom of expression, movement, and freedom from discrimination. These are not just legal provisions; they are the bedrock of a free and fair society”.
“Furthermore, under the Child Rights Act, certain activities are strictly prohibited, including the marriage and betrothal of children under the age of 18. These prohibitions are not merely guidelines but essential safeguards designed to protect the future of our children”.
She appeal to all stakeholders—Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and the general public—to join hands with the State Government in this vital mission.
She said together with the robust support of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development under the amiable leadership of the Honourable Commissioner Hajia Fatima Momoh, the State can curb these heinous practices and guarantee a safer, more secure future for every Nigerian child, especially in Kogi State.
