Kogi Assembly Speaker offers scholarship to 30 Oworo Students
The Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Aliyu Umar Yusuf has given three million naira as scholarship to Oworo Students.
A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker and made available to the media indicated that this was part of the outcome of the National Convention of the Students Union held in Karara, Lokoja Local Government Area on Saturday.
The Speaker who was represented at the event by the Local Government Chairman, Comrade Abdulllahi Adamu noted that the decision to present the scholarship was part of his campaign promises in the run-up to his election.
He noted that as their representative, he owes his victory to God and to the support he enjoyed from the entire people of Lokoja II, stressing that even though he heads the Assembly making him a representative of the entire state, the decision of the area to give him their mandate paved the way for him.
The Speaker called on the students to be serious in their studies, noting that it was the only way they could become better citizens of the country and the State.
He said education is a catalyst for the overall development of the area, and enjoined the students not to allow social vices to truncate their educational pursuit.
Rt Hon Umar mentioned that examination malpractices, cultism, internet fraud and over types of vices were inimical to achieving the objectives necessary to their growth.
He noted that the scheme would become a regular yearly intervention from his office, and praised the continued support being enjoyed from the member of the National Assembly for Lokoja/Kogi Kotonkarfe Federal Constituency, Hon Danladi Aguye and others, which has brought about positive socioeconomic turnaround in the area.
On his part, the Chairman of Lokoja Local Government Area, Comrade Abdullahi Adamu who chaired the convention, commended the leadership of the body for the numerous programmes that have improved the welfare of Oworo Students and Oworo Community in general.
He charged the Students to continue to improve and find ways to be useful to the Community in all ramifications.
Comrade Adamu further pledged to initiate a personal support programme for the Oworo Students from next year.
The scholarship scheme covered students from Agbaja, Tajimi, Ogbabon, Ibaru, Jakura, Oyo, Oshokoshoko, Jamata, Karara, Akpata and Irimi Branches of the Students Association.
