Senator Sunday Karimi has secured the All Progressives Congress ticket for Kogi West Senatorial District after a decisive win in the party’s primary election held at the weekend.
The result was officially confirmed by the Kogi West APC Senatorial District Returning Officer, Alhaji Haruna Isah, who presented the figures to the Chairman of the APC Kogi State Senatorial Primary Election Committee. According to the declaration, Karimi polled 51,665 votes to defeat four other aspirants.
The full results are:
1. *Senator Sunday Karimi Steve* – 51,665 votes
2. *Samuel Aro* – 620 votes
3. *Smart Adeyemi* – 571 votes
4. *Alhaji Abubakar Zakari Ola* – 414 votes
5. *Elizabeth Adedoyin* – 18 votes
The margin reflects a clear endorsement from party delegates across the seven local government areas that make up the district.
The outcome signals continuity for Kogi West, where Karimi has represented the people since 2023. In his first term, he built a reputation for translating federal appropriations into projects that affect daily life. These include the rehabilitation of rural roads and bridges, the establishment of computer-based testing centres, and scholarship schemes that have supported thousands of students. Party members say these interventions were key to the overwhelming support he received at the primaries.
For APC in Kogi West, the result further consolidates the district’s position as one of the party’s strongest bases in Kogi State. The district has a well-rooted structure, with influential figures such as Engr. Bashiru Gegu in Kogi LGA helping to keep the area firmly within the party’s fold. Lokoja and Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu have consistently delivered wide margins for APC, and party leaders expect the same pattern to hold in 2027.
Speaking after the declaration, party stakeholders said the primary was less about individual contest and more about maintaining momentum. They argued that a second term would allow Karimi to build on infrastructure and education projects already underway, including the Iluhagba–Mopa–Isanlu–Egbe road and the three additional CBT centres earmarked for Lokoja/Kotonkarfe, Kabba/Bunu/Ijumu, and Yagba Federal Constituencies.
With the ticket secured, attention now shifts to the general election. Karimi’s camp says the focus will be on presenting a record of service that resonates with voters across Okunland and the riverine communities of Lokoja and Koton-Karfe. For many within the district, the primary outcome has set the tone for a campaign centered on performance, accessibility, and the view that Kogi West cannot afford to disrupt a representation that is delivering results.
