Honouring a Man of Principle: A Tribute to His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Adoza Bello

I had the honour and privilege of speaking at the birthday celebration of His Excellency, the former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello. As we gathered to celebrate a life of purpose, vision, and impact, I was moved to highlight two truths that define his enduring legacy—truths not just known to us who have worked with him, but evident to all who have followed his leadership journey.
First, I spoke on a rare and refreshing trait in leadership today—his rejection of sycophancy. His Excellency does not entertain flattery or empty praises. He is a man who values honesty, boldness, and the courage to speak truth to power. It is this very disposition that has allowed many young leaders and political mentees to grow under his guidance, learning to stand firmly on values and integrity.
Second, I emphasized his unparalleled reward system. His Excellency does not just take note of hard work—he rewards it, consistently and generously. He recognizes capacity over noise, diligence over drama, and loyalty to shared ideals over lip service. His leadership style has inspired a new generation of leaders who are driven by substance and impact.
Lastly, I spoke not just for myself, but on behalf of my colleagues in the National and State Assemblies, and indeed all his political students, children, and allies. I made a firm promise: we will make him proud. We will uphold the standards he set, deepen the values he instilled, and extend the legacy he has built. In our words, our work, and our walk—we will reflect his influence and honour his sacrifice.
As we celebrated His Excellency’s birthday, we did not just celebrate a man—we celebrated a movement, a philosophy of leadership, and a legacy that will continue to shape Kogi State, Nigeria and beyond for generations to come.
