FASU Games: Nigeria’s artists excelled at NUXART – President

President, the Nigerian Undergraduates’ Exhibition of Arts (NUXART), Dr. Patrick Okpah, has said that Nigerian artists excelled at NUXART.
He stated that the event provided them great opportunities to showcase Nigeria’s rich endowments and great talents.
According to him, the event also showcased incredible artistic talents in Nigeria and presented the country as a tourist destination.

Okpah stated that NUXAR debuted at the 11th All Africa University (FASU) Games Lagos 2024 which took place from September 20 to 29, 2024 and was jointly hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Lagos State University (LASU).
According to him the inclusion of the Culture and Education Programme in this edition (which, according to him, is a product of the existing partnership between NUGA and the Centre for Culture and Environment Promotion) owes to the need to make FASU Games attain the global Standard that ensures global sporting events comprise the Tripod – Sports, Education and Culture.
He added that it was also designed by the organizers to ensure that Lagos 2024 enjoyed the rare privilege and historical milestone of being the first FASU Games to have the Culture and Education Programme as part of the hosting of the Games.
Okpah said: “The activities of the 11th FASU Games Culture, Education Programme include: Nigerian Undergraduates’ Exhibition of Arts (NUXART) Art Exhibition at both UNILAG and LASU, International Day of University Sport (IDUS) / World Clean Up Day (including Tree Planting) at UNILAG: International Day of Peace: Capacity-building Day (Arts, Tech, Business, Entrepreneurship, Leadership; Retirement Planning, Health, National Orientation and Anti-Drug Abuse).
He added that it featured World Tourism Day – guided tours to places of interest at and around LASU with the theme “Sports and Culture as Catalysts for African Unity.”
According to him, the programme is also designed to ensure the creation of the platform that will help to showcase the creative talents (especially in the areas of Art and Culture) of the various students and lecturers – as mentors – of African universities and to help develop the students’; and officials capacities (especially in the areas of leadership, olympic values, entrepreneurship, retirement planning, personal effectiveness, marketing, tourism, environmental awareness, personal health and fitness, stress and time management, financial intelligence, amongst others).
Okpah said: “The culture aspect of the programme is designed to be made up of Cultural Dance Sessions and an Art Exhibition which will have the Nigerian Undergraduates’ Exhibition of Arts (NUXART) as its fulcrum, with the Artworks (Paintings, Sculpture, Craft, Textile, Photography, Jewelry, et cetera) of some other African Artists – as mentors and participants – also on display.
“A special feature of the programme is the fact that the Art Portraits of some distinguished Nigerians (such as Nigeria’s President and the First Lady, the Governor of Lagos State and the First Lady, the Deputy Governor of Lagos and his wife, the Speaker of the Lagos State House Assembly, the Secretary to the Government of Lagos State, et cetera) and those of some critical FASU Games Lagos 2024 Stakeholders (such as the FASU President who is also the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports of Egypt, the FASU Secretary General, the representative of the African Union, the NUGA President, the Vice Chancellors of both UNILAG and LASU, and the Vice Chancellor of UNIJOS who will be the next host of NUGA Games in April 2025) will also be on display at the Art Exhibition.
“Other special features are that the winners of the 2024 Edition of our National Transformation event – Nigerian Arts, Culture and Tourism Awards (NACTA) and the Class of 2024 Inductees into the African Arts, Culture and Tourism Hall of Fame (as part of the Promoters of Arts, Culture and Tourism in Africa Awards – PACTA Awards) will be unveiled during the FASU Games Lagos 2024 Culture and Education Programme.”
He added: “The NUXART initiative has been held in USA, UK, Russia, Qatar, UAE (Dubai), Egypt, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and Nigeria, and has remained a very potent tool in empowering and exposing Nigerian Arts and Artists, and instilling Entrepreneurial skills in Nigerians over the last twenty one (21) years.
“The inclusion of this set of activities (such as Art Exhibition, Cultural Dances, and/or Lectures on Anti-Drug Abuse, Entrepreneurship, et cetera) will make the event more impactful and exciting; and would further showcase the creativity of Africa’s University Students and other relevant stakeholders. This, we believe, will also encourage productive activities that will increase our continent’s (Africa’s) Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“These activities will also serve as potent platforms to instill entrepreneurship and Self- reliance in the Participants. Also, in line with our objective to bring participants in contact with ethically successful people (in a bid to discourage cyber-crimes / criminal tendencies, ritual killings, cultism, drug abuse and other vices), some role models have been invited to speak and inspire the participants at the Capacity-building Day (Arts, Tech, Business, Entrepreneurship, Leadership, retirement planning, health, National Orientation & Anti-Drug Abuse) during the event, and to patronize the Art exhibition – especially at LASU (at the Directorate of Skills Development / Entrepreneurship Centre), Ojo Campus.
“The general public is also invited to support (and patronize the Art Exhibition at) the novel and impactful Culture and Education Programme, which will have Students and Lecturers from various Universities across Africa.”
