Ahead of the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the 2023 presidential election, it has, again, been heavily spread that the APC has zoned its presidential ticket biding to the South and consequently moved its chairmanship position to the people of the north-central to contest.
This shuffling according to the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as quoted by various news platforms came barely 24 hours after APC governors met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja with regards to the zoning arrangement for party offices on Wednesday.
Briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting, Nasir el-Rufai, reportedly said the positions earlier held by the north will now go to the south and vice versa as agreed in the meeting, adding that the party is united and that “By the grace of God, on the 26th of March, we would have done our national convention.”
However, from another quarter, people have been urged to ignore the zoning formula being spread by the media as emanated from the Kaduna State governor noting that the party has not concluded on going by any zoning arrangement.
According to the information obtained from certain chieftains of the party, if there was a zoning arrangement agreed on by the party, the Caretaker chairman of the party is in the right position to make the announcement and not El-Rufai. They argued that the governor of Kaduna state is not the spokesperson for Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, CECPC, nor for the APC.
Meanwhile, several North Central groups have rejected the reported zoning arrangement, saying that the position of the party national chairman is not their birthright.
