Okene/Ogori-Magongo House of Representatives hopeful, Captain Timi Iyela, has given opinion on the first year memorial of the climax of the #EndSARS movement in Nigeria.
According to the flight captain, youthful politician and philanthropist, “the #EndSARS movement whose climax is a year already, as occasioned by the sad and controversial events at Lekki tollgate on the night of 20th October 2020, is a movement started and sustained for days and nights of peaceful agitation by helpless and stereotyped youths across the country, to in one voice; call for police reforms in Nigeria, while rightfully holding the Government accountable, even via a right to peaceful protest, as the constitution of Nigeria as amended, puts it clearly that the safety of life and property of citizens is the primary responsibility of Government; and that even an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, not in a random police raid even without warrant and not according to the discretion of a power-drunk police officer looking for who to tag a criminal and shoot on sight.
“It is one year already, there is still much to be desired by the youths of Nigeria concerning what efforts the Government is sincerely making towards police reform in Nigeria.”
“Recently, in my own constituency, Okene/Ogori-Magongo, a police officer was caught on camera brutalizing a youth who was on a road trip. What does that tell us as a people? That our highways and roads are no longer safe for our youths, because of the same police officers hired on taxpayers money, that of the youths inclusive, to protect the same youths from harm? It is obvious the Government has done only little since it made promise to reform the police already at the peak of the #EndSARS protest last year,” he further said.
The House of Representatives seat aspirant, who is in his youth, has vowed to run a youth-concern-based campaign, ahead of the 2023 general elections, with a bid to take the pains of the youths to the next federal assembly as he hopes to win his constituents votes. He has vowed to personally sponsor bills that will deliberately carry the undiluted burden of the very letters and spirit of the pains of the youths of Nigeria whose sources of income are indeed legitimate but are sadly automatically stereotyped by the current Nigeria police system as criminals.
He assured the youths of the country that by God’s grace and by the support of his fellow constituents who are largely youths like him, when he gets elected into the House of Representatives in the next election, to represent Okene/Ogori-Magongo Federal Constituency, he will as first priority on his first day in office, personally lobby his way into whatever House Committee that will be constituted in the 10th Federal House of Representatives to perform oversight on the Nigeria Police Force, with a focused bid to ensure that indeed bills are sponsored towards reforming the police system already.
