Ebonyi State Government has debunked alleged extortion of motorists in Abakaliki capital city.
Commercial drivers operating in the capital city had accused the State Government that taskforce in the Ministry of Works and Transport are extorting money from them.
But addressing journalists in Abakaliki, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Francis Nwifuru on Transport, Chief Fredrick Nwogbaga described the allegation as baseless and urged the general public to discountenance it.
He noted that he never ordered any task force to go and collect bribe from any commercial drivers, adding that taskforce working in his ministry have always be impounding vehicles of road obstructions and order the person to go and make payment in the State Government approved bank account.
According to him” I have task force that operate within the capital city, we always impound vehicles and the owner will go to the Government approved bank account and made his payment”
“I never asked anybody to go and collect bribe on the road, of course I wasn’t there if such a thing happened. People should hold the taskforce involve responsible so that we can prosecute the person”
“There are many task forces, the ones working in the Ministry of works and transport are only enforcing on the illegal park users because we want to push every motor operators to go down to the central park and that is why taskforce are more serious in this point in time, though there are other task forces working for agencies from other ministries who are on the contract basis”
He charged task forces operating in the State to be law abiding in the discharge of their duties to ensure sanity in the State.
