IBDFM Calls for the adoption of Forensic Accounting Techniques to combat Fraud

The Institute of Business Diplomacy and Financial Management (IBDFM) has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to institutionalize forensic accounting as a strategic financial governance mechanism across Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in order to combat the growing menace of fraud. The Institute made the call at its 91st Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Program (MCPD) with the theme “Exploring the Impact of Forensic Accounting Techniques in Mitigating Financial Fraud in Business Organisations” held at the Faculty of Management Sciences Auditorium of the University of Jos on 3rd October, 2026.

In his opening remarks, the President and Chairman of Council of the Institute, Dr. Gado Shehu mni said that “….financial systems globally are vulnerable to a range of fraudulent activities that threaten their stability and integrity. In fact, financial fraud is a critical concern in financial crime compliance. It remains a persistent menace which jeopardises the stability and trust within financial ecosystems. Therefore, prioritising education and continuous training serves as a defence mechanism against fraudulent activities.”

In a thrilling keynote speech, the Keynote Speaker, Professor Yohanna G. Jugu, a renowned Professor of Forensic Accounting and Audit and the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Jos, submitted that forensic accounting techniques act as the primary defense mechanism to tame corporate fraud and remains a proactive approach for successfully combating fraud in today’s financial world. He stated that while forensic accounting often acts proactively by setting up continuous data monitoring, searching for red flags, and evaluating control weaknesses before major fraud occurs, traditional auditing on the other hand is reactive and basically reviews past financial records to confirm compliance.
