Declare Idemili Basin ‘Environmental Disaster Zone’ – Senator Umeh urges Federal Government

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator (Dr) Victor Umeh, OFR, has made an on-the-scene assessment of recent erosion menace within Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State particularly in Obosi and Ogidi Communities.

While in Obosi, Senator Victor Umeh was received by the NDC House of Representatives Candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Eric N Anyamene , the Traditional Ruler of Obosi, His Majesty, Igwe Chidubem Iweka (Eze Iweka III) represented by Chief Okey Mgbemena (Uzzi Obosi), the President General of Obosi, Barr. Chimezie Obi and Chief Emenike Mgbemena (Oboli Obosi), among numerous stakeholders of the Community.

Upon arrival at the scene of the horrible erosion disaster in Ugamuma, Obosi, Senator Umeh was greeted by a group of grieving women who threw themselves on the ground crying for government’s intervention in the disaster that have claimed farmlands, roads and threatens the survival of the community.

Disturbed by the lamentations and tears of the women, Senator Victor Umeh expressed deep concerns about the plight of the people especially residents of the area whose houses are at the verge of collapsing into the gully erosion.

He described the magnitude of the incident as terrifying landslide and a natural disaster requiring urgent intervention of the Federal Government to save lives, properties of people and to rescue the community from looming danger.

The Senator called on the Federal Government to declare the Idemili Basin An Environmental Disaster Zone considering the rising cases of perennial flooding and erosion menace in the area.

He thanked Hon. Eric Anyamene for calling his attention to the recent development and for having individually tarred the road and has also deployed his personal resources in palliative measures to control and contain the spread.

He assured the people of his concerted effort to get the Nigerian Senate aware of the ugly situation through robust legislative action upon resumption from recess, and to engage with relevant government agencies to attract aids while seeking permanent solution to the recurrent menace.

On their part, Hon. Eric Anyamene—NDC Candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Chief Okey Mgbemena (Uzzi Obosi) representing Igwe Obosi and Barr. Chimezie Obi—PG Obosi, thanked Senator Umeh for his timely response to the cries of the Obosi community within the short time of the information.

They extolled his proactive, responsive and impactful representation of Anambra Central Senatorial District, and for his projects and programmes of which Obosi has benefited significantly, assuring him of their continued support.
