Cross River State: From Doubt To Conviction Under Governor Otu

Senator Bassey Otu, popularly known as “Sweet Prince,” became Governor of Cross River State in May 2023 with a leadership vision anchored on the “People First” agenda. Since assuming office, his administration has pursued policies and programmes aimed at economic revitalization, infrastructure renewal, tourism development, youth empowerment, and institutional reforms across the state.
One of the notable areas of achievement has been in economic development, with efforts directed toward reviving moribund industries and attracting investments into the state. The administration has also focused on road rehabilitation and urban renewal projects to improve connectivity and boost commercial activities across the three senatorial districts.
In the area of tourism, renewed attention has been given to Carnival Calabar and other tourism-related activities that continue to strengthen Cross River’s reputation as a leading tourism destination in Nigeria. His government has equally invested in education through free WAEC registration for students, renovation of schools, and support for educational development.
The healthcare sector has witnessed reforms targeted at improving primary healthcare delivery, while agriculture has received support through programmes aimed at empowering farmers and opening rural roads to ease transportation of farm produce. His administration has also maintained collaboration with security agencies to sustain peace and stability within the state.
A notable humanitarian gesture of the administration has been the sponsorship of free transportation buses for citizens during festive periods, helping many Cross Riverians travel home to celebrate with their families despite economic challenges. This initiative has been widely appreciated as part of the government’s people-centered approach to governance.
Youth empowerment initiatives, civil service reforms, and support for small businesses have further formed part of the administration’s development drive. In recognition of these efforts, the governor has received commendations and awards relating to economic transformation and governance.
Support for Governor Bassey Otu is therefore viewed by many as support for continuity, consolidation, and completion of ongoing developmental projects and policies across Cross River State. Advocates of continuity believe that sustainable growth requires consistency, stability, and sufficient time for reforms and infrastructural projects to mature fully and deliver lasting benefits to the people.
