COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF THE NIGERIA ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN JOURNALISTS (NAWOJ), KOGI STATE CHAPTER
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kogi State Chapter, expresses serious concern over the increasing indiscriminate dumping of refuse across Lokoja metropolis and other parts of the state, as well as the poor evacuation of waste by the relevant authorities.
The association notes that the unsanitary condition poses serious health and environmental hazards and has contributed to reports ranking Kogi State among the dirtiest states in Nigeria.
It therefore urges the Kogi State Government and the appropriate environmental agencies to intensify waste collection, enforce sanitation laws, and embark on sustained public awareness campaigns to promote proper waste disposal and environmental cleanliness.
The association also expresses deep concern over the persistent scarcity of potable water in Lokoja metropolis, describing the situation as a major challenge affecting the health, welfare, and daily lives of residents.
NAWOJ therefore calls on the Kogi State Government to urgently provide a lasting solution that will guarantee access to clean, safe, and reliable water for the people.
NAWOJ commends the Executive Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his proactive efforts in strengthening the security of lives and property across the state. The association acknowledges the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and creating an enabling environment for socio-economic growth and development.
Furthermore, NAWOJ draws the attention of the Kogi State Government and security agencies to the increasing influx of people into Kogi State during the night. While recognising the constitutional right to freedom of movement, the association calls for enhanced surveillance and intelligence gathering to ensure that the movement of persons into the state does not pose security threats to residents or undermine the prevailing peace.
NAWOJ reaffirms its commitment to promoting good governance, public health, environmental sustainability, and the security of lives and property. The association calls on government, relevant agencies, and all stakeholders to work collaboratively towards addressing these critical issues in the interest of the people and the sustainable development of Kogi State.
