Seven months into office, the narrative at Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has changed completely. What was once routine administration is now a compelling chronicle of purposeful reforms, infrastructural renewal and academic repositioning, and the days ahead hold even greater promises.
The captain of this promising voyage is Prof. Salihu Sanusi Avidime, calm yet calculative, humble in disposition yet unwavering in purpose, firm yet fair, quiet yet consequential, strategic yet selfless, less in words but mighty in results.
Appointed on February 2, 2026 by His Excellency, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, he brought with him a rich academic pedigree and has since let his works do the shouting.
Beyond projects and policies, Prof. Avidime’s greatest accomplishment lies in the qualities of an effective administrator in an academic setting which he abundantly possesses and daily demonstrates.
A visionary leader who sees beyond the present and plans for a globally competitive Polytechnic. He is a man of integrity and transparency whose financial prudence and open-door administration have restored confidence and trust.
The Polytechnic Rector is inclusive and consultative, carrying the Governing Council, Principal Officers, Management, staff unions, students and stakeholders along in decision making, thereby fostering an enabling environment where schools, directorates, departments and units innovate with professional autonomy.
Dr. Avidime combines empathy with firmness, showing deep concern for staff welfare and student wellbeing while remaining decisive and unwavering in enforcing discipline, quality assurance and academic standards.
He is strategic and selfless, calculative in planning, meticulous in execution, humble enough to listen and bold enough to act, and his quiet but consequential style has empowered staff, strengthened institutional governance and promoted efficiency across the Polytechnic.
These qualities have translated into visible strides. He has renovated, upgraded and modernized the Polytechnic library to global standard for research and e-learning, while providing two electric and solar-powered motorized boreholes with immediate reticulation, one dedicated to student hostels and the other to administrative buildings, bringing a permanent solution to the perennial water supply challenges that had plagued the Polytechnic community for years.
At Itakpe Campus, construction of a 124 bed space hostel is ongoing, just as Hostel C is being remodelled and converted into a modern two-storey facility and Hostel A is undergoing total renovation for improved accommodation and convenience.
In learning and capacity building, he facilitated the participation of fourteen members of the Polytechnic in an international conference in Ghana to strengthen staff development, global exposure and institutional capacity, procured additional computer systems to equip the annex of the Information Technology and Resource Centre.
He has procured equipment for the first full accreditation of the Mass Communication Department and for the enhancement of the Directorate of Entrepreneurship Development Centre, and expanded and restructured the Part-time programme to include additional centres while retaining respective centres for examinations to ease student hardship.
As Rector, has also strengthened e-examinations, e-results computation and quality assurance mechanisms, ensuring that academic excellence remains non-negotiable.
His commitment to strategic partnerships has been equally remarkable. He has championed increased TETFund intervention for critical infrastructure, noting that the steady interventions of TETFund have helped tertiary institutions overcome some of their most pressing challenges and that any intervention would be deployed judiciously, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s NELFUND initiative as a landmark intervention that has expanded access to higher education.
The Rector, has continued to call for deepened collaboration among North Central institutions to maximize federal interventions and has built enduring relationships with government, professional bodies, alumni, traditional institutions and industry stakeholders.
It is therefore no surprise that the Governing Council led by Barrister Sanni Shaibu, in its goodwill message on his 50th birthday, described him as a visionary leader whose administration has repositioned the Polytechnic for academic excellence and sustainable growth, a leader whose administration has fundamentally reshaped the academic landscape through quality assurance reforms, strategic infrastructure development and inclusive administration, adding that the strategic partnerships and enduring relationships he has fostered have laid a solid foundation for a new era of institutional transformation and sustainable progress.
A scholar of repute, Prof. Avidime’s verifiable academic works include his PhD thesis on Internal Democracy and Democratic Consolidation in Kogi State, his MSc dissertation on Finances and Performances of Public Enterprises in Nigeria with focus on the Nigerian Railway Corporation, his Masters in Public Policy and Administration dissertation on revenue generation in Okene Local Government, and his BSc project appraising military authoritarian regimes in Nigeria, alongside several journal articles and conference papers in public finance, public policy and democratic studies.
A tight but bright start indeed, seven months of visible strides and promising prospects with much more to come. According to the Department of Public Relations, “To Almighty God our depth of gratitude is unquantifiable, to our indefatigable leader and best performing Governor, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, we are profoundly grateful for the opportunity bestowed upon our Principal to serve, lead and translate his wealth of experience into meaningful progress, and kudos to our Governing Council, Principal Officers, Management, staff, students and stakeholders whose teamwork and support mean more than mere camaraderie but a fitting recognition of the greatness we have in our hands”.
