CHILDREN DAY: KARIMI

Children’s Day is a special day set aside to heighten awareness of the importance and needs of children. Children’s Day is a special event to honour and protect children all over the world. It was created in 1954 to protect children from long working hours and dangerous situation in the workplace as well as give every children the chance to live and to get an education.

 

While Nigeria marks Children’s Day on May 27th, many African countries and others around the world hold their celebrations on June 1st just to create the awareness of the importance and the very sensitive place of children in our communities.

As we celebrate another Children’s Day on the eve of another transition of government in Nigeria today, one major area where our collective responsibility as parents and leaders is urgently required is the protection of our children which collectively includes the family, community, society and the state.

Every day in the media, we hear of abuse against children, violence against children, sexual abuse, child trafficking and assault on children either at home, schools or churches by guardians, parents, teachers and peer groups. It is important that parents should ensure proper upbringing and protection of their children and all children in their neighborhood.

As humans, it is our responsibility to all work together to ensure that our children are protected against harm so they can grow into productive adults who will contribute to the development of our community and Nigeria in future.
