Edo Queens FC of Benin pulled off an astonishing penalty shootout victory over stubborn Nasarawa Amazons FC to seal their place in the final of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament as the thrilling encounter witnessed no goal scored during regulation time.
The hot-paced encounter was more tense than turgid, just like the last time both sides met at the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six in Benin and nothing could split them after 90 minutes today.
The game witnessed a gripping clash that went down to the wire. Nasarawa Amazons in a defensive tactic tried to hold down Edo Queens’ attack. Edo Queens were denied twice by the crossbar on two different occasions.
The game was punctuated by injury delays for Nasarawa Amazons players. Their goalkeeper had to be treated after she saved Suliat Abideen’s long-range effort.
One big chance did come late for Nasarawa Amazons, with the Obaseki Girls goalkeeper, Nkiruka Obidinma stopping the long-range shot
In the shoot-out, Edo Queens were helped by Nkiruka Obidinma saving the first penalty before Joy Jerry clinched the win with the last spot kick. However, there was a moment of pause as Glory Osaghae’s penalty kick was saved, but the centre referee called for a replay after the assistant referee observed she crossed the goal line before the kick. It was taken and it was dispatched successfully. Abideen Suliat, Chioma Oliseh, Fajobi Yetunde and Joy Jerry all converted from the spot.
After the match, Moses Adukwu spoke on his team’s performance and he also applauded Nasarawa Amazons for keeping the game intense. He spoke about his boss (Christopher Danjuma) and also what he needs from Supporters from Edo Queens.
“When we are at the national team, he is my boss, but here, I am a boss, over there he is a boss, I thank God for the victory
“No other assurance, pray for us to win the cup, we’ve done well, the girls are in the final, just one more 90 minutes,” Adukwu told the media.
