BIOGRAPHY OF LATE MR. JOSEPH OGEDENGBE
The life of Late Mr. Joseph Ogedengbe stands as a luminous testament to a legacy of scholarship, faith, and service to humanity.
Born on the 9th of August, 1949, in the serene town of Ihima, within Okehi Local Government Area of present-day Kogi State, Nigeria. Joseph’s life journey was marked by an unwavering pursuit of excellence and a deep devotion to the cause of God and man.
He commenced his early education in 1956 at Holy Trinity School, Oboroke-Ihima, where he laid the foundation for a life of learning and intellectual curiosity.
His brilliance shone early, leading him to St. Barnabas’ Secondary School, Kabba. There, he distinguished himself by achieving a Grade One result in the West African School Certificate Examination (WASC) in 1967—a remarkable feat that opened greater academic doors.
With a thirst for higher learning, he proceeded to Government Secondary School (GSS), Okene (now Abdul Aziz Atta Memorial College, Okene – AAMCO), where he pursued and successfully completed his Higher School Certificate (HSC) between 1968 and 1969. In his quest for deeper academic attainment, he gained admission to the prestigious University of Ibadan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in French in 1974. Not resting on his laurels, he returned to the University of Ibadan for postgraduate studies, obtaining a Master’s Degree in French Literature in 1985.
Joseph Ogedengbe’s academic brilliance was recognised internationally when he was awarded the French Government Scholarship on two occasions. His first academic sojourn in France culminated in the award of a University Diploma in French Studies in 1972. His second sojourn, in 1988, earned him a University Certificate in Audio-Visual Pedagogy in French, further enriching his linguistic and pedagogical prowess.
Professionally, Mr. Ogedengbe dedicated more than three decades to the teaching, research, and promotion of the French language and culture. The bulk of his academic career was spent at the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, from 1976 to 1992, where he served with distinction. He held several key roles, including Coordinator of the National Certificate of Education (NCE) Sandwich Programme in French and Supervisor of the French Summer Course for NCE students in French-speaking West African countries—a role he fulfilled diligently for over a decade.
In 1992, with the creation of Kogi State, he transitioned into the newly formed Kogi State Civil Service, serving within the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) in Lokoja. Rising through the ranks, he served as Director in various Directorates and Zonal Offices of the Commission until his voluntary retirement in 2009, after a meritorious career.
Beyond his academic and civil service engagements, Joseph Ogedengbe was a man of profound literary gifts and spiritual depth. He was a seasoned playwright, essayist, preacher, evangelist, and an inspired author. Fluent in both English and French, he penned numerous French articles and textbooks, many of which are yet to reach the public domain. His prolific output included the publication of over ninety thought-provoking articles in a national weekly newspaper within just two years—a remarkable testament to his literary dexterity.
Driven by a higher calling, following his retirement, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to the writing and free distribution of Christian literature and tracts, inspired by divine instruction through the Holy Spirit.
His works span across theological reflections, Christian living, and evangelism, aimed at strengthening the faith of believers and reaching the lost.

Their union was a testimony of divine partnership, yielding fruits both in ministry and family.
Together, they were blessed with children and grandchildren.
The life and labours of Late Mr. Joseph Ogedengbe continue to echo the words of the Apostle Paul: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). His legacy lives on through his family, his writings, and the countless lives he touched for the Kingdom of God.
