A Yahoo boy Economy!
I have travelled to a couple of mid sized Nigerian towns recently and I can tell you that many Nigerian businesses are sustained by the yahoo economy.
Practically all hotels in the towns visited are sustained by yahoo boys. Without yahoo boys, they would have all gone bankrupt! Fact.
First of all, road insecurity makes travel unattractive, so, tourism is at its lowest ebb. Couple this with high diesel costs, high phcn charges, and high cost of all hotel operating inputs, indeed, most hotels would have shut down! They are sustained by a new class of patrons: yahoo boys.
They are living large in all hotels, from the most expensive to the least expensive. Indeed, one hotel owner told me he initially didn’t want their patronage, but he was forced to turn a blind eye when it became apparent that the alternative was to shut down his hotel!
The yahoo boys also sustain eateries and fast food establishments. Their money seems to demand showy spending and they do so religiously.
Girls don’t seem to be in the yahoo trade, but from they way they too flock hotels in the company of these boys, girls seem to be major beneficiaries of that black economy. Every hotel I checked, I found girls who are barely teenagers in their droves. They are at the beck and call in service of these boys. In the proverbial analogy of flies and corpses, these girls simply follow the money, despite the risk to themselves!
Nowadays, female student hostels harbour less girls than hotels, all thanks to the yahoo phenomenon
The other downside of the yahoo lifestyle is the drug and alcohol abuse and its attendant consequences. Only a fool will refuse to know that increasing incidence of psychiatric illnesses in the youth is a consequence of the drug abuse that their lifestyles seem to entail!
Anyway, it seems that these boys make so much money, but they can’t seem to keep any of it. They spend and spend and spend! The more outlandish, the spending, the better! Other than that, they simply sleep by day and press their laptops all night.
As a sociologist, I know that there will be hell to pay down the line when these kids become fathers and mothers! What kind of upbringing can they bequeath to their children?
What will these corrupted yahoo boys and their girls do when the yahoo cash flow dries up? Of course, they will move into worse crime and our society will be far worse for it.
So those of you who see nothing wrong with it, brace up! We will all pay the price, sooner or later!
