By joshua A CALL FOR FACT-BASED PUBLIC COMMENTARY: A RESPONSE TO PASTOR STANLEY AJILEYE’S RECENT ARTICLE
The latest opinion article authored by Pastor Stanley Ajileye has again brought to the fore the important conversation around political commentary and the responsibility that comes with it. Every citizen, including men of faith, has the constitutional right to express political views. However, for public discourse to be healthy, such views are best anchored on verifiable facts, balance, and a spirit of constructive engagement.
As a pastor, Pastor Ajileye occupies a position of trust in society. The Christian faith places a high premium on truth, integrity, humility, and peace. The Scriptures remind believers to speak truthfully and to avoid bearing false witness. For that reason, many expect public commentary from spiritual leaders to reflect those values, even when addressing political matters.
It is in this light that some of the assertions in the recent article deserve closer examination.
One of the claims made is that the current administration has not employed graduates and has only focused on political appointments. A review of recent developments shows a different picture. Under the administration of His Excellency, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, Kogi State University, Kabba has engaged qualified graduates, including holders of Master’s degrees and Ph.Ds, into academic and administrative positions. Other government institutions have also continued to bring professionals into public service across different sectors.
While government can and should do more to address unemployment, it is important that assessments acknowledge both the challenges and the steps being taken, rather than present an incomplete picture.
Another area of concern is the suggestion of a rift between the Kogi State Government and the Presidency. This does not align with the political reality. Governor Ododo was elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the same party that produced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. There has been no official policy or pronouncement from the Kogi State Government indicating hostility toward the President or the Renewed Hope Agenda. Given that Governor Ododo assumed office under the same progressive platform, it is reasonable to expect alignment and cooperation between the state and federal government in the interest of the people.
Political analysis is vital to democracy. But for it to be useful, it must be rooted in facts and presented in a way that promotes understanding rather than division. When articles rely heavily on assumptions, unnamed sources, or conclusions drawn without evidence, it becomes difficult for readers to separate opinion from verifiable reality. This can create unnecessary tension and distract from the real issues affecting citizens: jobs, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security.
The people of Kogi West, like Nigerians everywhere, are discerning. They appreciate criticism that is fair, and they also recognize progress where it occurs. Constructive engagement helps democracy grow. It allows government to be held accountable while also acknowledging efforts being made.
It is understandable that Pastor Ajileye, like any concerned citizen, wants the best for Kogi State. If the goal is to advance the state, then public commentary can be more impactful when it combines critique with facts, and when it proposes solutions alongside observations.
In the end, the future of Kogi State will be shaped not by controversy, but by truth, unity, and the collective effort of leaders, citizens, and commentators who are committed to responsible dialogue.
The people deserve information that is accurate. They deserve debate that is respectful. And they deserve leadership and commentary that prioritizes progress over polarization.
May our conversations continue to be guided by facts, fairness, and the desire to build a better Kogi State for all.
