The need for stakeholders in the mining sector to strive towards ensuring that a responsible mining analytical frameworks is in place has been stressed.
Tsema Yvonne Ede, of Henrich Boll Foundation, Nigeria, an environmental activist, made the disclosure at the day 2 of the 3 day ongoing training for critical stakeholders of Mining Host communities with the theme: “Rights, Responsibilities and Remedies”, organized by Global Rights on Fiscal Governance for Solid Minerals in Nigeria for members of the Federation, holding at K Class Hotel, Abuja.
The activist stressed the need for Government, Investors, Host communities to strive towards ensuring that there is a responsible mining analytical frameworks in place to enable the nation harness the maximum benefit derivable from the sector.
In her presentation titled: Forensic documentation, authentication and reporting of negative impact of business activities in communities, the activist listed major harmful aspect of mining to host communities to include damage to Local livelihood, loss of access to water, wide life, lamented that aside injuries and health challenges, citizens lose there lives owing to the negative impact of mining activities.
Still on the harmful impact, mining, the Activist explains leads to air pollution, workers fatalities, occupational diseases, rape and other sexual abuses, expressed dismay also that it leads to destruction of cultural heritage.
