HON. UMAR YAHAYA: THE RARE LAWMAKER INVESTING IN TODAY AND THE NEXT GENERATION

In an era where legislative representation is often reduced to mere rhetoric, Hon. Umar Yahaya is redefining what it means to serve. He is not just a lawmaker, he is a builder of futures, a rare breed whose impact transcends the present and speaks directly to the next generation.
On Friday, 9th October, 2026, Abejukolo stood still as Hon. Yahaya hosted the 5th democratically elected Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Wemi Jones, for the flag-off of this year’s Connect Back To School Initiative in Omala Local Government Area. It was more than a ceremony, it was a statement of purpose.
The initiative, conceived by Hon. Yahaya, is deliberately targeted at easing the financial burden on students and their families, rewarding academic excellence and improving access to quality learning materials in schools across the 11 electoral wards of Omala.
In a display of uncommon commitment, the lawmaker unveiled a comprehensive support package that captures both compassion and vision. A total of N5 million will be shared among 100 students drawn from public and private schools, with each beneficiary receiving N50,000 to cushion back-to-school expenses. In the same vein, he announced a N1 million scholarship for Miss Ojonedu Benjamin Jemimah, the highest-scoring candidate from the Connect-JAMB Scholarship Programme in Omala in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, a clear message that hard work pays. To further deepen access to learning, educational materials worth N12.5 million, including whiteboards, textbooks, school bags and writing materials, will be distributed to schools, pupils and students across all 11 wards.
Beyond palliatives, Hon. Yahaya showed that he is interested in fixing the system itself. Alongside the Commissioner for Education and community leaders, he inspected the dilapidated structures at Government Secondary School, Abejukolo, signalling a resolve to tackle infrastructural decay head-on and restore dignity to public schools.
For Hon. Yahaya, education is not charity, it is strategy. From the Classroom to the Future, every child matters is not just a slogan for the Connect Back To School Initiative, it is his governing philosophy. At a time when many chase the next election cycle, Hon. Umar Yahaya is busy securing the next generation. He is that rare lawmaker who understands that true legacy is not in projects commissioned for applause, but in children empowered to dream beyond their circumstances. Omala has found one, hard to find, impossible to ignore.
