The Treasurer of the Kogi State Peoples Democratic Party, Hon. Alfred Bello, has called on the party to learn from the principle adopted by the founding fathers of the party inception.
The PDP Treasurer in a statement says: I will advise the party to learn from our founding fathers principle of zoning.
” In 1999, PDP never pronounced zoning. The party threw the contest opened. That was why Abubarkar Rimi from Kano in the north slugged it out with Olusegun Obasanjo from Ogun State in the South. Eventually Obasanjo won in a free and fair primaries.
” Our founding fathers believed power should rotate to the south and they tailored the mind of the delegates by robust engagement.
” Even when PDP was in power we did not zone the presidency. In 2007 under Obasanjo regime Musa Yar’adua from the North contested against Rochas Okorocha from South East.
” Even in 2019, the party did not zone the presidential ticket, it was thrown open. That was why Ayodele Fayose indicated interest. At the end, nobody obtained form from the South out of their own volition not because they were zoned out of contest.
” So if we can’t zone presidency while in power, is it now that we don’t have power that we should be talking of zoning.
” Nobody can give what he does not have. The party should allow open contest while the delegates will determine who governs them
” The APC should not be allowed to gag us in zoning our presidential ticket because they have zoned their own.
” PDP is a democratic Party that has been practicing the tenent of democracy objectively and we should not get it wrong by following the steps of conservative APC who are not better than NGOs.
