One of the news making the rounds in the political space is about the issue of the electoral act. It should be recalled that the bill generated a lot of controversy between the senate and the executive before it was finally signed into law by President Buhari. The president on more than two occasions refused to assent to the bill because of some issues that he claim were against national interest. The national assembly had to amend the clause to fit into what Mr. President deemed fit to be for the interest of the nation.
Just recently, a discovery has been made by the executive on the same bill but this time, the Senate has refused to consider amending It. The area of consideration in the bill is Section 84(10) of the Act which specifically reads, “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the nomination of candidates for any election.”
It further states that where a political party fails to comply with the provisions of this Act in the conduct of its primaries, its candidate for election shall not be included in the election for the particular position in the issue. However, elected officers including governors, deputy governors, the Vice-President, and members of the National Assembly and the state legislature will be allowed to contest and participate in the primaries.
The Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami; the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi; the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; and other political appointees believed to be interested in elective offices will not be able to participate in the All Progressives Congress primaries expected to begin in May unless they resign. This is the state of things following the rejection of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill by the Senate on Wednesday.
The refusal of the Senate to amend clause 84 of the electoral bill, depicts that the Nigerians Senate is not a rubber stamp senate as many people have said.
