2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse: Kogi CP Identifies drug intake, abuse as major push factors for crimes.


 

 

The Kogi State Commissioner for Police, CP Edward Egbuka has identified drug intake and abuse as major push factors responsible for several crimes committed by criminals arrested by the Command.

 

 

The Commissioner of Police made the disclosure when he received in audience, a non governmental organization, Community Anti- Drug Abuse Advocacy Initiative as part of activities marking the 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse, came into being by resolution 42/112 of 7 December 1987. The General Assembly decided to observe 26th of June every year as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.

CP Egbuka lamented that drug abuse and intake has eating deep into the fabrics of the society, explained that most criminals usually arrested by the command always confess to committing the crimes under influence.

The Police Commissioner added that most crimes committed in other parts of the world as proven by research to be most times drug motivated, expressed readiness to partner organizations like CADAAI and others in the fight against illicit drug abuse.

While pointing out that the country is in an election year with the completion of party primaries, a period where political thugs, usually influence by drugs cause destruction and violent crisis, urged CADAAI to step up her efforts in advocacy and sensitization of youths on the dangers of drug abuse.

The Police Commissioner solicited the help of well meaning individuals and organizations to partner with the police in preaching drug abuse, pointing out that where there is peace in the society, the Police too would have peace.

While pointing out that the dangers of drug abuse cannot be overemphasized, says it destroys the family and Society, expressed worries that the high rate of substance abuse if not curtailed would have negative consequences on the future of the society.

He called on parents, religious and other non governmental organizations to take the preaching against drug abuse with the seriousness it deserves, concluded by saying the future of the country would become suspect when youths, addicted on drugs become Leaders, expressed worry for the country’s future with youths who are tomorrow’s leaders addicted to drugs, urged CADAAI to keep up with it good work.

 

Earlier in his remarks, Cheniba James, Co-ordinator, CADAAI Kogi State Chapter, said the global observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse aims to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.

He lamented that illicit drug abuse and intake has become a time bomb steering the society in the face, reason why he pointed out that all hands must be on deck.

The State Co-ordinator CADAAI, says drug intake and abuse not only truncate destinies of young people, it causes death in many cases, cautioned youths to stay away from the intake.

Highlights of the 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse observed by CADAAI Kogi State Chapter was road walk along major cities of Lokoja, with members carrying placards with inscriptions warning against the dangers of drug intake from Zone 8 roundabout to Ganaja flyover bridge to Post office and the Kogi State Police Command Headquarters.
