As the world celebrates this year’s International Environment Day, Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission HYPPADEC has emphasized the need to plant more trees to reduce the effect of climate change on the environment.
Kogi State Coordinator of HYPPADEC, Engr. Joan Oguche made the remark during an event to mark the Day at Gadumo, a flood prone area in Lokoja Local Government Area.
Engr. Oguche noted that the World Environment Day is worth celebrating as a clean environment is panacea to a healthy society.
According to her, as part of activities to mark the Day, the Commission decided to donate tree seedlings to residents of Gadumo Community as well as LGEA Primary School as a way of protecting the environment.
On the theme of the celebration, “Solution to Plastic Pollution” the HYPPADEC Coordinator advised the people to avoid polluting their surrendings with plastic rubbers as well as leather.
Some Leaders of Gadumo Community, Elder Zacheous Shaka and Elder Dan Awodi commended the guesture, saying it is first of its kind in the History of the community.
They however appealed for a permanent solution to the annual flood flood that ravage the community and the destruction is too much to bear.
In his presentation, Mr. Samuel Kakwagh, an Agriculture officer under Community Affairs in the Commission said Plastic pollution is a global problem as it also affect soil fertility.
Mr. Kakwagh advised the people of the State to avoid tree felling and plantore trees.
The Head Mistress of the School, Hajia Ibrahim Rashida thanked HYPPADEC for celebrating the Day with the College as well as provision of seedlings.
