A two time Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Sunday Karimi has called for caution on the issue of Value Added Tax, insisting that what should be paramount on the minds of Nigerian leaders should be peace and unity.
Hon. Karimi represented Yagba Federal Constituency between 2011 and 2019 in a statement, urged Nigerian leaders to thread softly on the issue of VAT pointing out that this is not the time for asset sharing as Nigeria remains one indivisible nation.
According to the statement by the former Lawmaker titled: Tussle over VAT collections; Need to thread softly, Nigeria’s peace and unity should be paramount in our minds as responsible leaders.
Hon. Karimi said: “A lot has been written and pronounced about the VAT collections between the states and the Federal Government.
“As a responsible parliamentarian, I owe it a duty to respect the independence of the judiciary as a critical arm of the government to adjudicate on such serious and sensitive issue.
” It is better not to comment on issues pending before the court. However, it is important to state that before the discovery of oil, Nigeria’s economy was dependent on Agricultural produce majorly from the Northern part of the country, with the proceeds equitably shared amongst the federating units.
” This is not the time for assets sharing, Nigeria remains one indivisible nation. We therefore need to join hands together to solve the problems of insecurity and the dwindling economy due to the shortfall of oil revenue”.
The former Lawmaker urged Nigerian leaders to join hands in fighting the burning issues of insecurity and dwindling economy occasion by the shortfall in oil revenue rather than dessipate energy on VAT, that would further tend to polarize the nation.
